Richard 'Dick' Grayson was born into the circus life of Haley's circus. His parents, John and Mary Grayson, were the show's greatest act, the acrobats known as the 'Flying Graysons'. So being brought up with it all happening around him, Dick became quite the acrobat himself from a very early age. When he was 12, Dick's parents' line broke halfway through their performance, where they both fell to the ground and died. However, the lines they used were WayneTech's finest, an unbreakable cord that could not snap or be cut. Dick knew this, and so knew someone had killed his parents. The Police took Dick in their car, but stopped on a hill-side and began attacking him. Luckily, Batman appeared and took Dick with him, where the reporter Vicki Vale took pictures of Batman 'kidnapping' Dick.

Batman told Dick that the Officers were actually assassins, and took Dick back to his Batcave. There, he trained Dick into becoming his side-kick, and after 6 months, he donned the alias of Robin. To prove it wasn't Dick as Robin, he was adopted by Leslie Thompkins whom was unable to have children and a friend of the Batman and Bruce Wayne. Eventually, he grew tired of being Batman's side-kick and became Nightwing at 17. Then, when he turned 18, he left Leslie and Bruce to live in Bludhaven where he became a mechanic, and then the head of Wayne Enterprise's division there. 2 years later, Bruce came to Dick to request his help in training a new team of younger heroes, the 'Titans'. Dick would become their Mentor, and watch over their movements, whilst still acting as Nightwing in his own right.
