Description This was a little gift for a friend of mine who's had a rough patch recently.

EDI is one of the least appreciated characters, IMO, in the Mass Effect Fan art community. And unfortunately when she is there, it's usually a...less than dignified presentation. Heh. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good scantily clad woman as much as the next guy (and this robot was designed for combat as much as my 300 was) but still, just good, clean pics of her are hard to come by.

Even harder to come by is a picture of her that's rendered well. Sketches and drawings are one thing, but many pics featuring her in game model are just straight up...wrong. There's no other word for it. I went to great lengths (with help from Grace) to make sure mine wasn't in that category.

I ended up using a car paint shader (sans flakes and edges) to give her a metallic sheen and a subtle reflectivity. The visor is a standard glow shader, nothing too special there. And of course there's the Normandy back there, which I thought we just had to get into the pic. Can't have EDI without the SR2.

Also, an M90 Indra. Because reasons.

Thanks for looking!

Edi winking at the viewer is hilarious.
The reflections are very cool, although some are not exactly subtle (like those two points of light on her chest, lol).
Great footwear,
The Normandy and Edi do go together, yet in this case the ship feels a bit out of place to me.

Just a reflection, I swear.

Possibly out of place, but I did it for the visual, not the realism.

The guns in mass effect are so ridiculous.

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-11-28 00:33:04 +0000 UTC]

Eh, they're not so bad. Β Compared to some games like Doom, Quake, or Borderlands I'd say they're pretty mainstream.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-11-28 04:51:18 +0000 UTC]

I'm not mad or anything but do you know how the mass effect guns work?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-11-28 18:55:32 +0000 UTC]

It varies. Β You've got the really out there ones like the Reaper Blackstar that fire tiny molecules that, when broken by impacting solid objects, create small tears in space time. Β But the vast majority just shave "bullets" off of chunks of tungsten, and using a rail-gun type mechanism, fire them at about light speed, adding a ton of mass in the process via a reverse use of the tech behind mass effect drives in ships.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-11-29 06:49:34 +0000 UTC]

True. My point is that even with ow high tech there weapons are there ammo is cooling clips. Cooling clips! They couldn't come up with a better reason for the guns not to have unlimited ammo. That's why they seem ridiculous to me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-12-05 23:50:15 +0000 UTC]

It actually makes sense, the ammo is live-forged in many cases, using similar technology to the omni tools. Β The process generates a lot of heat, but unlike the tools, which fabricate slowly and have a lot of surface area to cool, the ammo is fabricated in the firing chamber without much ventilation (and you'd want it hot anyway, to add punch to the shots.) Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-12-09 02:08:23 +0000 UTC]

It would create no more heat than igniting gas into plasma, or accelerating a projectile through a rail gun. I think they could have come up with a better system.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-12-09 02:56:51 +0000 UTC]

Fabricating matter from energy is one of the most catastrophic processes available to perform in our universe. Β See "inside of a star."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-12-09 22:08:44 +0000 UTC]

It's not the science behind it. It's simply the idea itself that I find ridiculous.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-12-11 21:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Why? Β Energy based weaponry has no ammunition, pure and simple, and since the ammo is fabricated through a machine, it is essentially an energy weapon. Β And their main byproduct (or of any weapon really) is heat. Β What would you prefer in battle, having to wait for your gun to cool after a lot of firing, or to simply eject the heat sink and put in a new one?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-12-11 22:28:41 +0000 UTC]

That's entirely false. Plasma based weapons use gas as amunition. The guns in stars wars use tibanna gas cartridges, while the plasma based weapons in halo have all their power and gas stored in the gun. The point is the guns in mass effect essentially have unlimited ammo, but their ammo limit (heat venting clips) is something that the guns from other games do simply by venting waste heat via vents and opening panels. Take the plasma repeater from Reach for instance. When it overheats it opens up and vents all the waste heat in a matter of seconds. The same amount of time it takes to replace a cooling clip but there's no limit to how many times it can be done.

Also heat is a byproduct of virtually every reaction in the universe, so saying its a byproduct of every gun doesn't mean much.

Not only that but the rate that the "ammo" is used up doesn't make sense. The avenger can be fired continuously non-stop, or fire half it's clip, wait 2 minutes and fire off the rest and it still uses up the same amount of the thermal clip. This obviously wouldn't work because of the second law of thermodynamics. Hot flows to cold and cold flows to hot until they're equal. So theoretically this would mean the cooling clip would constantly be loosing heat to the much cooler areas around it not to mention the other parts of the weapon.

It's not that it's impossible (it is science fiction) it just seems like a squandering of advanced technology that just doesn't make sense.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DarklordIIID In reply to farcide [2013-12-13 22:48:59 +0000 UTC]

You're comparing guns from other franchises though, that's against the whole supposition of belief that all Sci fi demands. Β We accept that light sabers can project beams of light of a fixated length because that's what the fictional science has determined is possible. Β In the case of mass effect, we accept that the firearms create bullets out of thin air by converting energy to matter, which if we take what is true about physics, ie that you can do this, it just takes a ridiculous amount of power, it's not a huge logical leap to say the main byproduct of this process, forgiving the generating of that power, would be huge amounts of heat.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcide In reply to DarklordIIID [2013-12-14 10:04:41 +0000 UTC]

My point isn't that's impossible it's just illogical based on the technology of the mass effect world. They could of made the guns have unlimited ammo simply by giving them cooling panels instead of heat clips, but in order to balance the game they had to use heat clips. My point is they should have designed their weaponry to have limits capable of fitting into the game while remaining reasonable to the universe's tech. Perhaps if the ammo was tungsten cores which shave off bits as ammunition. This would maintain a high level of technology while being reasonable and applicable to the game.Β

Simply put, my point is my dislike for mass effect's weaponry stems not from it being impossible (as what's possible is determined by a universes canon) but rather being illogical compared to all other weapons in other shooters.

Unit645 In reply to farcide [2014-09-20 20:31:48 +0000 UTC]

The lore explains this. In ME1 guns had infinite ammo, but overheating was a major problem in combat as cool-down took too long. The Alliance and other Citadel races switch to the clip system after seeing how effective it is when in use by Geth for maintaining constant fire. Since slapping in a new clip is quicker than blowing on your gun frantically as you get over-run by hostiles.Β

Stumbled upon this in someone's faves and I have to say it was a great find! You did great with her model as it definitely looks more lively than some of the others I've seen... She just looks really dead without a metallic effect. D: Also, props to you for adding to the clean EDI fanart pool. I honestly can't stand searching art of her because of all the distasteful arts I find. Also major props for the weapon addition. Reminds you she can fight just as much as she can run the Normandy.
