Thank You.

I'm a beginning sculptor, mostly because I want to make my own prosthetics. It's good practice.

But as of late, I get extremly discouraged looking at the works of others. Looking at this progressions just helped put things back in prospective. How it takes baby steps to make works of art. Thank You.

And Keep Up The Great Work!

What kind of clay do you use?

I ususally use grogged white clay.

I found that working with this stuff is easier. 'Normal' white clay pieces sticks together harder and i read somewhere that the grogged clay is stronger and not so fragile after the firing...

Ah, why grogged?

Mn, aye, grogged is a bit sturdier. Just an extra step I'm not used to seeing anyone but professionals who focus on plates and other tableware use.

Thanks for showing the progression. My attempts so far start look just like your first picture. Then....., they don't get much further. LOL. At least I know I am beginnning correctly!

I like the progress of your work here.
-If you don't mind my asking, what kind of clay did you use?
I'm a mask maker and have began trying to make my own mask bases out of clay to build my masks on top of. I've used normal non-drying kids clay -which was too oily for my like, and I've used some air-drying clay which sculpted very nicely, but cracked as it dried, unfortunately. I'm looking for some grey clay like this that is non-drying but easy to sculpt.

Any advice is greatly appreciate
-Thanks!

Well i work with earthenware and stoneware clay and i fire them in a kiln.
Actually the masks i made aren't wearable because these are a bit fragile and heavy for an everyday use.
So i think these materials are very different that you use beacuse you need a kiln for firing them...
But maybe you should try polymer clays: Fimo or supersculpey!

I get what you're saying. I'm not wanting anything permanent...let me quickly explain what I'm doing so you understand what I'm asking

I've got a couple of heavy-weight plastic mask forms which I've been using as my mask bases. I layer tissue paper and a glue mixture over top of the mask base 'till it's reached the desired thickness and once it's dried I remove the paper from the mask base and there's my paper mask.
-So, in my desire to develop new 'looks', I've started sculpting differant designs over top of the plastic mask bases using non-drying clay and layering the paper over top of that as I stated above.
I recently tried an air-drying clay and while it sculpted very nicely, it wasn't a thick enough layer of clay on the mask base and dried too quickly and so cracked -had to be thrown away.
So my thought is to continue using non-drying clays and sculpt my mask bases and then cast them in plaster so I can make multiple permanent bases from the first one and then just continue to re-use the non-drying clay.

With all that said, and I hope it makes sense, I'm looking for a good non-drying clay that I can use over and over again.

Thank you!

Oh i made almost the same process with this papermache mask : [link]
But i use bases for my ceramic masks too. I build the base from normal earthenware clay . It not necessary to fire it.
i made a tutorial where you can watch one of my base. It's for saltceramic but the main process is the same!
Actually the first page is where you can find it but i link the hole tutorial:

as you can see i covered my base with a plastic bag. Without it the material sticks to the base. I think it works with paper too...

-And the monster looks incredible!

Thank you!

That's a really useful, inspirational piece you've got there, and I'd love to see more people doing progressive "how-to" demos. There's nothing like it to get people kick-started on a new venture.

I love seeing progressive photos! I have tried to do this but I always forget to take a photo while I am sculpting! Nice work and looking forward to the final artwork.
