Description The black haired surgeon went back home after a stress-filled day at work, thoughts swirling in his mind like a tornado. Streetlamps were lit, walkers-by passing him left and right. Even after the unexpected meeting with his ex a few months ago, Law still couldn’t think of anything else. Somewhere in his chest, his heart was hurting more than before, his mind was at another place, another time. The secret touches, the sweet whispers in his ear to encourage him after he felt like failing, the warmth from your hugs after a tiring day, the tears rolling over your cheeks silently, the forlorn look from your eyes as he said he would leave you for choosing another position at work… Selfish. All he had been was selfish towards you and only now did he fully realise that fact, did he fully acknowledge that part. His shoulders were heavy, getting even heavier the more thoughts he spend on you and your son, his son.

The keys hit the hole multiple times before his frustration took over and almost threw away the keys towards the streets. With one last harsh movement, did the key enter the lock, unlocking the door for the surgeon to enter. The lights were off, something not so surprising anymore after all. It has been happening more times than he could count lately. Not even bothering to call out, Law stripped his feet from his shoes and walked forward through the house, the lights still turned off as he ventured ahead. The door to his bedroom was closed, while it was always on a crack before. A silent sigh escaped his lips as he pushed the door open, his girlfriend sleeping peacefully on the left side of the bed and the soft glow of the moon shining through a crack in the curtains. His nose picked up a scent he was slowly getting familiar with, another scent accompanying the woman lying in his bed. Happy that he’d already eaten before getting back home, Law felt his stomach churn and a burden heavying his chest.

The breathing of the female next to him would soothe his mind before, now it was only frustrating him. He didn’t turn to her, pushing her away instead every time she’d try to get closer, reeking of that smell. That night, it would take him a lot longer to fall asleep. His mind kept wandering, reminding himself of what he had before, yet tossed away from his grasp. The warmth from the one next to him felt different, strange, foreign. It wasn’t as he was used to, no matter whether he was thinking of her next to Law or you. This just wasn’t it. Sighing heavily, his eyes trailed over to the sheets over to his side, the lump where Victoria laid to sleep. Turning quickly, Law’s eyes fell on the far wall of the room with a frown. Maybe he should stop deluding himself after all. It’s not healthy.

A few days after his realisation of what he should do, but has yet to set into progress, he met you on the streets. It was his day off, planning to simply ease and empty his mind with a dull walk, as his grey eyes found your form walking towards him, shopping bags filled with groceries caught between your fingers. Your (e/c) eyes were lowered, your lips slightly parted as they formed silent words, a tick Law had always found amusing when you were retracing a conversation to come up with different outcomes. It was necessary in your line of work to speak clearly and think about other aspects as well. When he was close, Law called out to you, watching you carefully as your head whipped up in curiosity, never hate or malice. “Yes?” You inquired quietly, your voice stopping Law from speaking for a moment.

Without any words spoken, Law took at least half of the bags dangling from your grasp, your fingers happy for the release of the weight. A quiet ‘thank you’ left your lips, making Law wonder why you still had to make proper eye-contact with him after the brief exchange before. “Would you like me to walk with you?” As you didn’t react at first, Law echoed his question, adding your name afterwards. Blinking your eyes quickly, you finally looked up, locking Law into place with the sullen look in them, before you sucked your lower lip between your teeth and nodded. On the way towards your home, Law was the one to try and try again to start a conversation, you simply nodded or shook your head to answer some of his questions. No long answers, but simple enough for the time being. The change in demeanour made Law wreck his brains of what could’ve possibly happened for you to change drastically ever since he had seen you with his child. Silently, he bumped into your shoulder, trying to get a reaction out of you. As you bumped into him back, he smiled a bit, smiling a bit wider as he heard a soft chuckle leaving your lips. “How’s Shiro doing?” Your footsteps halted and Law turned around slightly, waiting for you to continue on your way to your home. Your lips parted in a shocked manner, eyes almost too wide for comfort and the bags were threatening to slip from your fingers grasp.

As soon as Law had noted your distress, you shook your head, a sad smile accompanying the gesture before setting for a comfortable pace forward. “He’s doing great in school. I just wish he would make some friends along the way.” Law tilted his head in inclination, urging you to go on and without another word, you spoke again. “He’s too smart and as much as the teachers are telling me they do everything in their power to prevent something to happen, Shiro gets picked on too many a time. It happened on the former school as well, but it was getting out of hand.. He..” You sighed sadly. “They had locked Shiro up in the toilet and let smoke fill the area, if not worse. He hadn’t been the same afterwards, denying to go to school, skipping classes and asking me time and time again to let him come to work.” Law’s eyes wandered over your worn out face before looking back over the streets, knowing how you hated people to misunderstand things and starting to pity you. Law hummed before stopping you in your tracks.

“You’re an amazing mother, (y/n)-ya. The teachers should’ve been better and you should stop blaming yourself for it.” Law’s fingers had halted you by touching your side, the touch on her jacket too familiar and out of instinct, his fingers curled in the cloth, holding you tightly. “Don’t let them get to you. Shiro will turn out just fine.” He whispered, sadness seeping in his voice as he noted you didn’t look at him anymore. The once fierce fire that had accompanied your presence was smouldering and deep within, Law knew it was his doing. A heavy sigh, filled with more emotions than one, escaped your lips before you looked up and finally did Law lock his eyes with yours. His hope was reflected in the beautiful (e/c) irises, yours more hidden beneath the betrayal you felt towards him, Law knew, but he had to try, didn’t he?

Softly, you spoke, almost seemingly afraid of a rejection, Law noted. “Would you like to see him?” Law nodded, a smirk tugging on his lips. You had stepped forward when you asked it, closer to the male that had rejected you before in your eyes, yet still trusted somewhere as you had laid yourself bare in front of him with that one sentence. The male nodded and let your lead the way once more, your footsteps filled with more confidence than before. Looking around, Law noticed people staring a bit before looking back and proceeding in their track to where ever they had to be.

It didn’t take long to reach your apartment and there, sitting on a chair by the table, a book on the table, Shiro sat, reading. He looked up as he heard the door close and you call out to him. He jumped from the chair and rushed to your side, taking over a light bag from your hands and walking it to the kitchen in front of you. “I brought someone along with me, will you be so nice to greet him, Shiro?” You asked him placing your bags on the counter before grabbing Law’s. Law had wanted to help you, but as he didn’t know where you kept your groceries, he simply stood in the doorway, not knowing what to do. It was a strange situating to begin with and somewhere he felt like he was intruding on your personal life he didn’t belong to anymore. Shiro turned to Law, his lips parted to say something, yet clamped them back shut upon recognizing him and gave Law a stinky eye. “Be nice, Shiro.” Both males heard and Shiro turned to her to argue, but as she had her back to them, he simply gave up.

“How do you even know I was being rude. Wonderwoman, I tell you.” Law heard Shiro mutter softly before the young one looked up at the older male in slight wonder and curiosity. “I still don’t like you.”

“Shiro…”

“Sorry mama. I still don’t like you, mister Law. You hurt me. Please go away.” The words were said so sincere, Law looked down at the male in slight shock before he crouched down to Shiro’s height, looking at the boy with scrutinizing eyes. By now, you had stopped your movements to put away the groceries and watched them both with amusement shining in your eyes, a chuckle muffled behind your hand. Law’s eyes flitted up to you, an amused glare shooting your way before glaring playfully at the boy in front of him.

“How about… no.” Law retorted, feeling slightly victorious as the boy stomped his foot and pouted at him. An itch worked its way down Law’s shoulder to his fingers, making them twitch. He wanted to ruffle Shiro’s raven black hair. The realisation that he was a dad finally downed upon him and now, already, did he want to treat the boy as the son he was, how unbeknownst it even was to the young one. Shiro looked from Law back to you and sighed loudly, like only a kid could do, before walking back to his chair to hop on top of it and started reading his book again. Shiro’s act made Law chuckle lowly before his eyes found your figure rummaging through the cabinets. You hadn’t changed much, but the small details were more alluring to his starving eyes than Law wanted to admit. It had been long since he had felt a sliver of peace in an everyday life, yet as he took a peek in yours, he found it in this household.

“Would you like some coffee?” Law’s ears perked up from your question, his lips quick to answer for a familiar drink coming from your knowing hands. “Shiro?” Your silence after your son’s name was enough to know you waited for any kind of reaction from the boy. Shiro hummed, his eyes still skimming over the written words. “Would you like some hot chocolate?” The book slammed shut and he was almost immediately next to you, his fingers grabbing the kitchen counter. Law imagined how the boy’s eyes would wander over your movements as he agreed profusely. The older male watched silently as your hand caressed the boy’s hair, smiling down at him.

‘This is what I missed out on?’ The thought saddened the surgeon as he watched your exchange until you had the cup of coffee in front of his nose, standing awfully close. Law’s nose picked up the heavenly scent of your magical coffee and his fingers grasped for the mug, his fingers touching your shortly, creating a shocking sensation to travel through his body. Grey eyes were locked onto (e/c), no one to break the connection. Leaning forward, Law’s lips almost caught the airflow coming from yours. ‘Just a little bit closer.’ Your eyelids started to shut, the sign of trust almost hitting the male with full force. Hope was winning in his mind and as he leaned just a little inch closer his lips would touch yours..

“Yuck.” Shiro exclaimed, snapping you out of it as you took a step back, having left the mug filled with coffee in Law’s hands, turning around quickly to gather your own and Shiro’s mug with hot cacao.

The rest of the afternoon was filled with tension and as you had escorted Law to the front door, you apologised profusely, telling Law you didn’t know what overcame you as you refused to look him into his eyes anymore. Law’s tattooed fingers grasped for yours, holding your clammy hand in his, and smiled down at you. “I didn’t mind, (y/n). You should know that.” Turning to her fully, Law grabbed your chin with his other hand, moving your chin up to look at you more closely. Law leaned forward once again, whispering in your ear as his other hand caressed over your arm. “I wouldn’t even mind us to proceed from where we left.” Leaning back to look at your face for any reaction. His eyes flitted from yours to your lips only to go back up, their silent question hanging in the thickening tension of the air around the both of you. This time it was you who leaned on the tips of your toes, reaching up hesitatingly. Law’s words were mere whispers, mere strokes of air against your lips before he, too, leaned down to meet your lips.

“I never stopped loving you.”
