I love this style you have here... it's simple, yet you put details into it with the shading and colors~
And a nice, clean background that actually looks like it doesn't take a lot of effort to do but still looks really good!! You make it seem like an easy task, even tho I always have trouble with backgrounds and making them fit with my subjects T-T
I also think Cain looks absolutely squishable here ~

I think I was just lucky back then - I wasn't very good with folds in clothes etc., so if they look good in this drawing, it was probably pure luck.
As for the background, I can totally feel your pain. It's very hard to create a background which would both look good/impressive, but would also fit with the rest of the image.
I would recommend you to study perspective - it will help you to create any background you like.
