A while ago, I was asked to come up with a design for Dai's unnamed Hero character. My only guidelines were that his powers came from a buckle containing a limitless supply of self replicating Nanobots, and that whatever the costume looked like, it must be coloured black, white and gold. This is what I came up with.
(At the time when I developed the concept, I was totally unaware of Max Steel, and any similarities between the two characters are completely unintentional and coincidental. Nevertheless, I believe the concept diverges far enough to not be a problem)

Backstory (Extrapolated from original ideas):

The buckle is a device of unknown origins, possibly alien or somehow from the future. Before World War 2 it had been discovered by the government who had failed to unlock its secrets. After the war it was either stolen or lost, and remained missing until it was discovered in the present by Thomas Dekker.

Thomas activates the buckle completely by accident (It triggered because it detected a specific gene in his DNA similar to Stargates ATA Gene), whereby it pierces his wrist with a flexible tube to inject him with millions upon millions of tiny nanobots that will grant him great abilities; among those would be enhanced strength, speed and endurance. It would take between a week to a fortnight for them to maximize him to top human potential.

A little while later, he learns that the buckle functions like a remote, acting as a kind of psychic link between Thomas and the nanites coursing inside him. The hero suit would initially emerge out of a need for protection; this was the suit at its most basic level. Over time he’ll learn how to modify and upgrade the programming of the nanites and the suit to further enhance his abilities and add other significant upgrades like flight and so on.
At first, his hero work would be thrill-seeking, but eventually he’ll learn the responsibility and become a great hero.

Other Details:

I designed the civilian outfit to resemble the hero costume on purpose. Conceptually, I imagined that it would be his favourite shirt, and in homage to the original Ben 10 when he first assumes hero mode it would influence the suit design. Additionally, it’s designed as an homage to the Power Rangers, whose civilian clothes always provide a “punch in the nose” giveaway to their heroic alter egos.

For the hero suit, I imagined that the suit would be constructed from the Nanites within Thomas’ body, and would form as a one piece outfit akin to the Tron Legacy suits which served as a starting point for my design. Of course, that base was added to with influences from additional sources.

Powers:

On their own the nanites provide the following boosts –

Enhanced Strength – to maximum human potential
Enhanced Speed – to maximum human potential
Enhanced Durability – to maximum human potential
Enhanced Endurance – to maximum human potential
Enhanced Cognitive Abilities (including intelligence boost) – This doesn’t make him smarter in the traditional sense. Rather, the Nanites operate like a supercomputer generating a huge spike in Thomas’ IQ potential. This manifests primarily by his developing a “Rapid Assimilation Eidetic Memory” that allows him to learn at a vastly accelerated rate. Additionally, through his nanites he is able to link with computers and control their functions and transfer data by download instead of learning.
Psychic Resistance – Because his mind and the nanites work in conjunction with each other for all mental and physical processes, Thomas is largely immune to psychic attacks. Any effort by a telepath or technopath to exert control over him, will be countered by either his mind or the nanites.

The Nanites also provide regenerative abilities. In extreme cases, they can bond with the surrounding tissue to regenerate damaged/lost organs or limbs, in essence, becoming a cyborg prosthetic that functions as well, if not better, than the originally damaged part. This self regenerating nature means he could potentially live forever, although age and injury would lead to further cyborg conversion, leading him to become less and less biologically human until eventually he could potentially become fully composed of a nanite generated form.

The Buckle operates as a control interface for the nanites which remain inside him at all times via a psychic link. This allows Thomas to call on the nanites higher functions by will, thought or verbal command. This interface is also intuitive, allowing the suit to interpret his needs at any moment and adapt itself accordingly. This makes the buckle crucial to Thomas’ hero identity; while the nanites provide a constant boost to his natural abilities, without the buckle he is unable to call upon the suit or its more practical functions. Because the buckle bonds to a single user, if someone were to steal the buckle it would do nothing for them so the nanite powers can’t be stolen.

With the buckle, the nanites can –
Manifest as the Hero Suit (with and without the helmet). The suit would have different operational setups, providing variations in design that allow for an “overcharge” effect which specifically exploits a single power aspect. These would include:
Standard Suit – This would be lightly armoured, allowing for high mobility and a high rate of speed but offering only average protection from harm. This suit would include flight systems once they are designed (based on the Iron man flight systems).
Heavy Suit – Heavily armoured, allowing for greater levels of strength and protection at the expense of reduced mobility and speed. Flight functions would also be restricted in this armour.
Hydro Suit – Specifically varied for underwater adventures (including flippers or modified flight systems and oxygen synthesizers/re-breathers)
Astro Suit – Specifically varied for space based adventures (Includes better armour and radiation protection as well as an enhanced, and more powerful, flight system. Also provides practical upgrades like Gold tinted UV visor to protect against unfiltered sunlight.
(Possibly other environmentally enhanced suits)
The suit can also manifest a range of offensive and defensive applications to aid in whatever situations may arise. These can include weapons, stealth technologies and enhanced detection devices for tracking or spying on criminal targets.
