Description

A monster of two parts, one shadow and one flesh. The "head" of the creature is brainless and blind, but deftly controlled by the shadowy back half, which houses the creature's only true consciousness. A False Serpent's organic side is only a nonliving physical material generated to interface with the world. Despite its realistic appearance, it feels no pain, fears no injury, and can be easily shrugged off or regrown by the true body as necessary. As the False Serpent's shadow grows and splits new limbs, the physical body mimics the deformation in crackling pantomime, making each side a reflection of the other. The False Serpent does not need to hunt to survive, but desires live flesh as both a source of supplemental energy and an anatomical template. The more well-fed a False Serpent is, the larger its physical body. On the other hand, a False Serpent who has consumed a wide variety of prey will have more effective body plans at its disposal. These traits also have the unfortunate side effect of making the False Serpent vastly prefer living victims, and they will never attempt to kill a target before consumption unless they have no other option.

In battle this creature is mercilessly aggressive, attacking heedless of any physical injuries it may receive. Even bisecting the creature's body is not a guaranteed victory, as its shadow portion is capable of re-attaching the lopped off parts. Only when its front half is damaged beyond usability will it opt to slink away and recoup itself. The False Serpent's only notable weaknesses are to magic, especially holy magic. Its tail must have line of sight to view a target, and it quickly becomes confused when that sight is broken or obscured.
