Description

My fursona isn't the only one to get alternate versions, apparently...

But this is actually something I have been wrestling with for quite a while. Helena remains to be my most popular original character drawn to date, and while I haven't done anything serious with her in terms of story development, her design and species always proved to be a bit difficult to work into anything other than a specific kind of fantasy setting; one that was populated by anthromorphic fantasy creatures.

While she does have a human form (in fact, all my characters technically get a human form due to their "coding" and what they would be like without the furry factor), it may not always work for most settings (especially since it seems like I'm the only who'd focus on other things besides medieval Europe for a fantasy story or Role Play). So I had to figure out what kind of furry species I could "fall back on" for her to be when not dealing with a fantasy universe full of anthromorphic dragons and what not and when her human form wasn't an option. It took a lot experimenting and wondering how much I could deviate from the current dragon design before I got here.

To be honest, a lion wasn't my first choice, but in the end, it was the most pragmatic of choices. Most Eastern Dragons do incorporate lion-like heads and features already, and being that she is one of those dragons, having a lion form for a "mundane anthro animal" worked in her favor. People probably won't like the fact I changed the color of belly and what not, but to be brutally honest, that was one of the biggest drawbacks of her design. While it was great for the dragon to most degrees, that kind of coloration doesn't really work on most other animals (I couldn't even think of other reptiles in real life that had those colors). And honestly, it's much easier to design clothing color palettes around a more monochromatic and de-saturated fur/scale/skintone than it is to have to factor in super wild and hard contrasting colors (eyes roll because everyone knows all I do is design skimpy attire anyway, but even bikinis need good color coordination).

Helena doesn't really change much in personality though. She might have to do some other jobs or may or may not have elemental powers over fire and jade, but she's still the same confident, sassy, and smart-assy as she'll ever be... It's just now she can wear hats and not sneeze fire on people in a modern setting if that's what she gets put into to.
