Description Hi guys and gals! I've stayed up all night and morning working on this page (10 hours total for colouring the damn thing! @__@ X_X;;...)

If possible could you guys let me know your honest feedback on the colouring job? Is the lighting correct? Is the brightness and contrasting balanced? Are the colours equalised and match the mood of the page? Please don't be shy to critique - I need to learn as much as I can to improve and having extra eyes help!

So many questions to ask but nevertheless I would love to hear your thoughts on how the colours worked/not worked on this particular page! Thanks and yay Ashworth says no more to an empty stomach!!

UPDATE - 29/11/2010]

Hi again all! Thank you so kindly to each and everyone who had pin-pointed errors in the dialogue and to those who had shared their critique on my colouring work for this particular page! Becaue of it I'm more satisfied with the re-modifications while taking into consideration some of the advice I've been given here by you lot (for instance - the time of day is confusing throughout all panels, Ash worth had too much shading on Panels 01 + 02, Ruby lacked depth on Panel 02, etc...)

So thank you once again for sharing your feedback! Maybe it's actually a good idea to submit my pages here so that more people can share in their views on what can be fixed - and also help spell check/grammar check for me so that I can make the changes right away! What do you think?

The new and improved colours can be viewed on my official website: [link]

With regards to the lighting on the backgrounds - what colours would you suggest for a bright mid-day?

So far my timeline for the day with Chapter 09 goes like this: Pages 01-03 - Early morning (sun is just about to rise), Pages 05-06 - Mid-day (when the sun is fully up) with blue skies, cloudless).

Page 06 is all the way mid-day. I changed the colours in the middle and bottom panels because I felt lighting would be different if you're in town - light bounces off from objects such as buildings, trees and people hence giving off a different colour right?

Any help on this would be much appreciated buddy!

Heya Syaming-li! I didn't expect a critique from you and boy am I very pleased. Thanks for the technical feedback on the way this page was coloured. Definitely there is a problem with the time of day being portrayed on this page - seems like the afternoon at some of the panels when it's suppose to be mid-day (where it's bright and sunny). I'm slowly in the process of fixing up the colours and shading so thanks for all the helpful advice!! = ) *thumbs up*

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

There's some really nice color going on here, especially in the third and fourth panels. But the first two panels are not very pleasing to the eye-- too many bright primaries, like the lime green grass and Ruby's feather... hair... whatever go against my taste in color (please note that my monitor is calibrated a little strangely-- it makes reds brighter). Also, that green tint in Ashworth's hair seems out of place in the bright afternoon or evening lighting. Perhaps if they were in a forest it would work, but not on the beach. Speaking of the ocean, the contrast in detail between the first panels' backgrounds and the rest of the comic is a bit jarring. The last thing I'm having trouble placing is the exact time of day you're going for. I'm guessing there's a time jump from afternoon to early evening in the third panel, but in the fifth and sixth panels seems to switch back to afternoon, due to the flatness of the sky, and the loss of that evening glow in panels three and four (which is excellent).

I know this looks like a lot of criticism, but really all these problems could be fixed with some quick tweaking.

Another thing I will add - it's such a bloomin' challenge to get the colours right when your characters are in a primary colour itself! XXD Humans don't have bright and vibrant colours in their skin (unless their costumes have colours to that effect)! It's funny I only notice this until you mentioned about how Ruby's red didn't go well with the bright green...

It seems that I've taken a tougher road in my journey to improve on my colouring! X_X; Thanks again for your opinion on the page.

Thanks Evan for your feedback and insight to the shading and colour elements of the page! I totally agree about the mood setting/time of day colours being all muddled up and confusing. I'll see what I can do to fix that up.

wasn't Ruby's hair a bit darker? She looks like a citrus we call Narenge! and Ashworth's fang looks a bit ... I don't know how to say... but graet one after all! I really like the way you draw it. but it's totally insane to spent 10 hours in front of tv drawing comic! you might hve to wear glasses like me -__-;;
Ashworths sick expression are so cool! but that girl/guy runing doesn't have a very clear face. and how you draw the city is magneficent! how do you draw it so good? would you give me some advice?
good luck and I miss the Pack man hat's comic... continue it please

I really like the way the new page here looks. The colours look really good, and your comic style has improved a lot. Of course, there are always things to learn too, and I guess the critiques you got are actually pretty helpful in that.
I like the panel with the town especially, it is still hard for me to include real backgrounds to my comics. I still have to learn alot in that direction.

I like what you've done with the distance speech bubbles; implanting the character's face into each one. Nice touch! And the colouring of that far shot, the roof tiles and everything, very purdiful. You've captured an early morning/late afternoon sunshine quite well.

There's something about the lineart and the lighting job that I can't quite put my finger on, though. Might be the tiny gradient of fade between shades? That combined with the fact that the lineart is pronounced on the characters and nonexistent on the backgrounds. It might be just me but I feel like a clear difference in style between character/foreground and background might as well go all the way, y'know? If the lines are gonna be sharp, maybe the colours oughta be sharp too, or it looks a bit weird.

It works well where the lines are a little thinner/blended in a little like in the wide-shot and the panel under it.

Keep up the good work, dude.

This is a lovely page of work that certainly shows a significant amount of improvement in the working of page layout, character design and most of all colouring. What you've done overall is good and a serious step up from the days of old, to see your pages enriched with colour and to also see how you've progressed with the facial expressions of those you draw and how fluent and animated they become. While over the top, they certainly work well with your style and really bring a great deal of the humour and enjoyment of your work.

What is really interesting to see here though in terms of colour is the exploration and play around with shading you've made with the hues. The shading is much slicker and tightened here and connected to what you are wanted to show and your ways of drawing. The soft edging and warm tint of the colours selected really have a better impact than being hard edged than in previous pages, allowing the design of the character and their characterstics to have more on an impact and appeal.

Overall this is nice and really shows a tremendous level of progression with both your story and workings of digitally colouring/drawing.

I've got much, much more to do - always falling behind after finishing the latest page. X_X; XD I'll probably have to do a backlog of pages so that I can keep up with the pace.
