Description
This is my first week of homework for Clothed Figure Drawing class.
Our instructor Thomas, taught us about stretch and compression on the day and gave us the animator's classic 'Flour Sack' exercise.
Each student had to come up with four fully rendered drawings of flour sacks in pose and with an element of story telling involved.
After doing this exercise I got a better understanding of how volume and mass works together when drawing figures. It makes me think twice about how a character will react in a certain pose - whether active or passive. Also it forces you to think about force and gravity and how you can use them to your advantage in creating a more dynamic pose.
I highly recommend you give it a go. Here, click on this link to learn the very basics of it - I'm confident that after a couple hours of drawing and applying this theory you'll improve on your drawing of poses so much more than before.
Also when I showed this for class critique this morning alot of them liked it and the instructor was very pleased with the result - I was humbled by the positive feedback when it was compared to the twenty-five plus student works presented in class. I felt that some of the others did a really good job so praise to them for their efforts!
Anyways like I said, give the exercise a go and let me know if you felt any improvement on your drawing of poses. All the best!

Ahh it looks so good, and I see your point on the sacks showing how the weight is spread out.

The shading is the biggest strength of this and I really like how the details of each item came out.

Ah! the classic flour bag. Those who give personality to a bag of flour and give life to anything.

Yep. I had to do this too back in animation school. It's actually quite amazing how much of a difference it makes in design and mass.
Yours came out splendid. ^_^
