I think deviantart compresses images. But all the uncompressed full size ones are at my free gallery at darthhell.com if you want to see them.

Thank you. Yeah I like to get a few jokes in sometimes with the dialogue. It's my sense of humor, I like to take it serious but not too serious.

It's actually pretty simple. In 3dsmax there is a tile texture, and you can set the tile color to have a variation.Β That way they are not all uniform in color and it gives it a more realistic look I guess.Β But what I did is set the tiles to gray and gave it like 50% variation and set it as a displacement map.Β So instead of color what I get is a different elevation of each tile, and that's what skews the reflection. And I use the same map to change the reflection.
I'm not too sure if other programs have that feature, but it would be easy to mimic. Create an image file and make it a grid (the more squares you make the more random the pattern would seem), then color each square a different shade of gray. Use that image as a displacement map and repeat tile the image as many times as you need to get the squares the size you want. Then take the same image and plug it into your reflection setting, that way the reflective qualities of each tile aren't entirely the same. That way they vary from real shiny and clear to dull and flat.
That ought to do it I think. If you want to get real creative, when you fill the color of each square with your gray, use a gradient fill at different angles instead of a solid color, that way the raised tiles would actually point in various directions.

Excellent, sometimes the best way to do it is just take a concept and then you start thinking of better ways to make it happen.Β What I would do to make it happen quickly is do a 5x5 grid and color them randomly.Β Then copy the whole thing and rotate it and paste it right next to the other one, etc. until you have 4 or 9 copies rotated. Then you can copy the whole thing, paste it as a new layer, rotate it and soft light the top layer.Β I always try to think of short cuts when doing these things. Actually I just made a quick one if you want to try it out.
