Give to the kiddies a book of history anda trip to, say, Chumnaja Gorka (a something in the middle of my hometown that looks like hill, but which really is a mega-tomb for the victims of the Plague) and they'll be grateful for the current state of the Word! And if they won't send the brats rough-camping in the middle of some primally pure frozen dirt for some days and see if they'll still like Mother Nature after that!-)))

Very true though I can fully imagine a nuclear apocolypse within our lifetime if things continue the way the're headed right now....why do you think I don't wanna have kids...it just wouldn't be right to raise them in such a sick sick world........x

It'll be interesting (in the chinese sense) to see exactly what kind of world we are leaving them. Since we are at peak oil production now, with demand set to continue to increase, but supply set to begin declining, then the world as we know it is almost over. The oil crisis will begin long before the oil actually runs out. And it will run out in 40 years. We are living in the last years of what will probably become known as the 'Oil Age'.

What actually happens from here is going to be hard work. Without oil, their will be no cars, no public transport, greatly reduced electricity supply (buy your solar panels and windmill generators now, without oil, no more can be built), no plastics, no cheap metal extraction, no more space travel, no more guns.

Things are set to get a little medieval on us...

Actually there are ample subsititutes for all the above mentioned items unfortunately research is held back by oil-addicted governments such as the u.s. which are driven solely on the power garnered from oil and therefor will not give out any gov't grants and do all they can to keep alternate fuel sources (i.e.) from becoming mainstream. That's the only reason why electric cars are so expensive......the whole situation sort of parallels the Dark Ages when the church held back ANY kind of scientific advancement for centuries....x

Electric cars still require oil. Without oil, not enough metal can be extracted to build the cars in the first place, or produce the electricity needed to recharge the batteries.

Whilst I agree that the course we are on was not inevitable, I also think we are past the point where we needed to be to build the kind of alternative power infrastructure needed to avoid major problems. It would be easier to build an alternative power infrastructure whilst we still have oil. Very soon, we are not going to have enough, and by the time governments and corporations start seriously pursuing alternatives, it will be too little too late.

You don't need metal to build cars...or plastics for that matter. There are alternative sources for pretty much every materiel we use nowadays but they'd rather use oil-based compounds instead because that furthers their reach into everyday life.

Sorry, this reminds me of a joke:

Ist Guy "Did you hear about the man who bought a wooden car?

2nd Guy "No?"

1st Guy "It wooden work."

Seriously though, what material could you build a car from that isn't metal? I know Cheech and Chong had one made from hemp, but that was just a film!

Personally, I'm kind of looking forward to the return of horses...

Yesh horsies would be cool oh and HA by the way funny.....x

No seriously tho there are plenty of polymers and whatnot that can be used in the place of metals or hell.....well I guess I nevva really though about the metal part too much but I know there are alternatives. But yeah it's totally too late anyway....we might as well just have our Nuclear Holocaust already and get on with rebuilding the scraps of human civilization.

I am hoping the collapse of the age of oil can happen without a nuclear holocaust, but there is always that danger.

The problem is going to be, when the oil runs out, how are we going to dispose of nuclear waste?

No the problem is the further america sticks its' dirty fingers into other people's pies, the closer we get to such danger.......x

Yes, but I've also heard rumours (unconfirmed) that more bullets are being fired by US troops in Iraq, that are actually being made in US factories. Meaning the US doesn't really have the logistics to start any more wars. It won't even be able to sustain the Iraq war if that rumours true...

Actually most of us had more ammo than we ever needed....especially support guys who never fired a single round....and them are the ones who usually hoard their excess which could be used by the Infantry guys who're actually getting shot at every day......beh so sick of this ridiculous war..............x

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AntonChanning In reply to stupidgame [2005-01-22 12:27:34 +0000 UTC]

I don't doubt that the US has huge bullet stockpiles. That doesn't really prove the rumour wrong for definite though. Bullet production could continue at less than there rate of use for some time before anyone in the frontline would notice. Still, it probably is just a stupid rumour. Don't know what its based on.

So you are actually out there or recently come back?

Back last January and never going back again...got kicked out of the army for being too crazy for the Infantry...yeah they don't like it when you actually start thinking for yourself das ist nicht gut fur soldaten ^_^.....

I'll tell you another definite fact about the war tho-the complete lack of body armor throughout the majority of the fighting....especially the front line guys...while meanwhile the support batallion I was with had a whole buttload that they kept in a friggin storage container instead of like giving it to the Companies from us that actually went with 3rd ID on the initial push..............

Exactly. With no oil, no machines. And if you remember, machines of the future will use US as fuel. So, it all sorta makes sense doesn't it?

Maybe those crack baby child molested Wachoski (sp) Brothers who 'wrote' the Matrix and that Unibomber guy aren't far off base.

Hmm, I guess its a matter of what happens first, the oil runs out, or AI becomes advanced enough to take over and use us as power.

Still, if its possible to use us as power, then it must also be possible to use animals, so maybe some humans will invent the technology, and use it on animals to keep things going until the AIs take over...

The only thing certain about the future, is that it is uncertain...
