I don't expect to make you change your mind, but I'll explain it anyway; in the Green Lantern mythos (comic books mainly, because the animated show is pretty different) there are different corps, wielding different colors-seven to be exact- each one powered by a specific emotion, green lanterns are fueled by willpower (or courage)and red lanterns with rage/hatred, which comes from pain (every red lantern has a tragic/violent backstory);Asuka is filled with rage and hate because of her past, specially towards the end of the series, that's why I consider it suits her.

Personally, I think the red ring fits her perfectly because of her backstory and behavior, Asuka is filled with rage and hatred, but that is because she has suffered horribly, as well as most of the Red Lanterns. Kaworu would represent the Black Lanterns better, since his gloomy and nihilistic personality.
