I really don't get why Near has that many Haters and is seen as a wanna-be-L o.OHe's totally different from L :I I like both of them. ^.^
So here's a sketch of Near from Death Note. :3

This is brilliant, and I completely agree with the sentiments stated in the author's note. Near and L are so very different. So, they aren't polar opposites. Does Near need to be?

I agree with your description. Near does try a little too hard sometimes, though...like when he was meeting with Light and he wore that mask. I hated that. But Near can just be Near because Near is perfect and I love him.
