I started doing a digital coloured version of my earlier drawing of Phryne, and it occurred to me that I may as well give her a bikini and some toad-skin-like sandals and put it in the square format to make it part of my babes and beasties series. They did have Bikinis in classical times, by the way, as recently discovered Roman mosaics from the Villa Romana del Casale attest.I was somewhat inspired by Sir Lawrence Alma Thadema with this one, especially all the marble in the background.

Le "bikini" n'a rien de gênant sauf que ceux découverts sur des peintures murales représentent plutôt un bandeau pour la poitrine...
Par contre je pense que le moment le plus étonnant de la vie de Phryné est cet instant où son avocat, ne sachant plus comment l'innocenter de son délit de profanation et surtout de sacrilège (peine de mort), la dénude d'un seul mouvement dévoilant sa beauté devant les juges qui, saisis d'admiration, l'acquittent.

Very cool, very classic. I was thinking more of Michael Parkes, but Thadema works. I'm curious, though ... what was the alternative to the bikini?
