Description An A4 sized pencil copy of 'The Accolade' by Edmund Blair Leighton (1901).

This is still just about my favourite painting, despite what it's put me through. One of my favourite details is the yong squire among the onlookers, who is evidently yearning for the day when he too will be knighted.

The knight's chainmail armour on the original is miraculously realistic, too. I've been doing too much digital art lately and I thought it would be healthy to get the pencils out. I wasn't looking forward to the chainmail.

This is easily my favorite paintings as well; it even surpasses the works of Waterhouse in my opinion (which is saying a lot for me).
I think you've captured the spirit of the original exceptionally well. BRAVO!

I normally say 800 years too late. I don't mind so much. We have the internet and toothpaste now.

You didn't so much need the toothpaste before all the refined sweeteners. But you would have prospered and flourished mightily in the great days of book illustration.

It looks wonderful!!! I love this painting by Leighton! (well, I mostly just also love Leighton in general, but that is besides the point...)

And oh-my-goodness, I KNOW! In the painting the maille is absolutely stunning. I can't imagine him doing it s well and NOT having a real life reference of some form or the other.

Okay, so, several awesome details that I really like about this drawing:

1.) the chair. Gah. LOVE the detail work you put into it. I think the perspective looks slightly off, but despite that it looks brilliant.

2.) The knight's belt. For whatever reason, it just strikes me as very cool.

3.) The monk and the squire. Mostly the squire's shirt. Again, random little thing that stuck out to me. It looks very... saxon.

I think he did collect armour and stuff. Not all of Leighton's paintings do it for me. Often his figures look suspiciously like Victorians in fancy dress, but this one has some magic in it. It captures the medieval ideal of chivalry perfectly.

Theophilia In reply to dashinvaine [2010-11-03 02:46:02 +0000 UTC]

I agree!

Hahahah, as for Victorians in fancy dress, sometimes artists can't be picky about their models, can we? Alas, people often won't do what we want them to do in a picture.

It's a long process, but so far looks pretty close to the painting. The window at the top is not there, but I've done almost her entire face.
