Another wonderful work from you! The colour scheme is wonderful here and I like how you designed not just the characters but also the setting - the mill with its wooden sculptures look awesome! Also, it is nice to see a familiar, central European motif - in Polish this creatures would be called "wodnik" which just means water creature: woda, vod means water in most Slavic languages... Anyway, thank you for sharing - it is a wonderful work - also, if you do not mind - I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas - all the best to you and your family!

Very glad you liked it and that you also faved the story which goes with it, BricksandStones! Slavic mythology is very interesting, and deserves to be better known!Β

I will have to read more about Slavic Mythology.

This is one of your best works, that's the first unterrifying Vodyanoj I've ever seen. I didn't know you COULD negotiate with them.Β  The character design is just stunning on him, superb on her, and the mill and background impressive even for YOU.Β  You have reached a new, high place, artistically.

Thanks. Yes, he's not meant to be too scary, even though he apparently likes getting an eyeful.Β

A vodyanoy, as explained in the link Dashinvaine posted. Vodyanoy are water spirits in Slavic mythology, some frog-faced old men who would guard the rivers, and, if displeased, drown the incautious, tear down dams, and crush mills. If propitiated, they would help those who made their living along the rivers. They thus had a special relationship (for good and ill) with millars.

Isn't it vodni

Vodnik in Bulgarian, Czech, Macedonian, and Slovak (as also shown in Dvorak's work), vodyanoy (водяно́й) in Russian, and so forth. The creature exists, with variations, all over the Slavic world; the names change, but stay true, by and large, to the root for 'water'.

Many thanks again. Great work on Gramps! There is something really mystical to the scene with the moonlight and fireflies.

Is the other one a rusalka?

No, a changeling (the child of a mortal and a fey/hag). You can find out more on her in the link above (or my own account, as you follow me ). There are two rusalki on the carved posts, though.

Well....... Could you edit a title and also write "aka Vodaniy" because of different languages calling him differently?
