They are good instruments, Bass VIs. They can be played as basses or baritones depending on the strings used. I played a Pawn Shop one and enjoy thinking of it, Those types are $799 on Musician's Friend the last time I checked (2013-Dec-6) though the store I was at was asking $600. I might be back to buy it, And play it in a band in-between the bassist and guitars or even standing-alone.

I bought a Pawn Shop one a day or two after I posted that. I like it but I'd like to replace the stock bridge with a wider one (Thicker La Bella strings cannot be intonated on the one I have) and I would also like the electronics to be like the original basses from the 60s; The stock five-way switch gives me fewer pickup selections - No choosing all three and no choosing the bridge and neck at once, As it is.
I did get a case with it though, With the instrument, For a little over $800.
