"Do The Timewarp!"

This meme is ancient. orz For those of you who're curious about my artistic roots, well, here's where I came from!

Note: I'm Asian. I draw myself like a generic Caucasianesque cartoon character because oh my god what is facial variety. OTL

- TLD;R UP AHEAD -

12-15yo:
12-year-old me was introduced to art and the world wide web by her fellow 6th-graders. As the pic implies, we (and our Mary Sues, oh childhood) were weaboo before 'weaboo' was even a term. orz

I couldn't draw at all, but I enjoyed scribbling my classmates' fan-characters with my ancient 90's mouse. I knew not this 'shame' you speak of.

In my 14th year, I came out as a big fat queer and drew nothing but Rumiko Takahashi-esque femslash in my notebooks. Manslash grew on me around here too, though I only dabbled in it textually. Ah, teenage self-discovery.

/fond headshake

16-19:
After a well-deserved beatdown regarding Mary Sues, 16-year-old me swapped her old crew for some more sophisticated pals. I spent these years aping styles that didn't fit me in hopes of impressing my new crowd. Bad idea. It didn't help me grow as a cartoonist or as a human being. Don't give into peer pressure, kiddos!

The missing 19th year:
Despairing of my age, I barrelled headlong into a 'creative competence crisis'. I went from CGing a few pictures per week to producing a doodle once every few months. I'd even contemplated throwing in the towel. Quite a waste of time!

20 and onwards:
Finally decided to make the jump from 'casual artist' to 'full-blown hobbyist'. I'm a different person now than I was in my teens! If I regret anything, it's that I wasted good time letting others dictate my creative path for me.

I'm glad y'all figured to join me on my quest to make up for lost time!

daughter-thursday In reply to randomacity [2011-07-18 20:17:11 +0000 UTC]

And that is true! I only started taking it seriously this past year. I don't consider what I used to do 'art', really, as all I did was draw Mary Sues with classmates and friends. LOL. I didn't use construction lines, references, perspective... no real artistic techniques. I just slapped things onto the page. :>

I know how you feel, I used to beat myself over for not really growing as an artist. I thought being a cartoonist was what I wanted. Now though, drawing is just gonna stay a hobby, and that's okay with me C: No regrets!

Gosh that dress is cute.

I know exactly what you're talking about with the whole changing your style to impress thing. I totally used to do that. I had a way I enjoyed drawing and anime is really frowned upon at my high school, even though when I was younger I could care less. Now I've grown as an artist mostly past anime, but it was really painful time for me. It makes me happy to see there are other people who went through the same thing

Oh honey, if there's anything I've learned it's that we're never alone where peer pressure experiences are concerned. :> Contrary to yours, all my high school art friends were fellow Asian weaboo who favoured certain manga styles. Some were awful talented for their ages, too!

/hugs

You should be proud of how far you've come, if not as an artist then as a human being. We all fall on our faces. Life's a learning experience, and the creative life moreso. Keep on truckin'!

I'm glad you didn't decide to give up~ From all I see now, that was an awesome decision to not quit. > u <)9 <333

Not so much a roller coaster as a leisurely ride that broke down and stalled once every few metres. LOL.

"I knew not this 'shame' you speak of."

And it's just as well, if you did, well, you never would've started drawing to begin with and then you wouldn't have MET AWESOME PEOPLE or GOT A DD or WHAT HAVE YOU and that would give me a sad! ...that is, if it wasn't for ME NOT KNOWING YOU. It's great you got into the "do it for the heart and soul of it" thing, because that ultimately is the point. And treating your younger beginning phase as an "eh, kids will be kids" as opposed to "ABOMINATION ANIMU UGGGH" is a rather mature way to go about it. You can't entirely diss your foundations, I've found.

Also, in regards to facial variety, did you choose not to do it just because or did you choose not to do it because you have difficulty reflecting unique facial features in a way that would meld well with your own work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

daughter-thursday In reply to HappyAggro [2011-07-18 18:53:51 +0000 UTC]

Can't argue with that!

I believe every tween nerdling of the late 90s went through a weaboo phase. So long as one matures past these phases, they're nothing to be ashamed of! It's all part of growing up. I don't know a single artist (beyond them child prodigies, 'course) who didn't have a boatload of Mary Sues and kawaii-desu fancharacters in their early teens. I think it's important for people, artists and otherwise, to be able to look back at their younger selves and fondly say, "I was such a child then."

To warp a line from a certain boyband of our era: It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from, or what you did, so long as you're learning.

Oh, and regarding facial variety, I'm still not sure how to change 'em up without losing the squishy charm I'm striving for. I'll figure it out eventually!

I wasn't exactly weeaboo, but I had a few Sues here and there. And yeah, you hit the nail on the head there.

You want me to link a few tutorials about that sorta thing? Might be of some help!
