Wow, it's been a long time since I've submitted something new. This is actually a pretty old model, by my standards, dating back to September, '08 , the whole of four months ago...

The model was pretty much done, but I couldn't make any kind of realistic fur that satisfied me; I tried again for a few hours today, but it's just to impractical, and time consuming. Perhaps someday in the future, but for now...

Daxter is Β© Naughty Dog Inc.

Even though he doesn't look like he has much in the fur department, Daxter is very impressive look! May I ask how you went about creating him?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dave-Mastor In reply to daydreamsinc [2009-08-04 23:35:48 +0000 UTC]

I made him in 3ds Max, like all my other models. It's a little hard to explain, but it's a very similar method to how Naughty Dog made the actual Daxter model. One of these days, I'll add fur.

Holy crap

I THOUGHT IT WAS A WALLPAPER MADE OUT OF OFFICIAL ART AT FIRST

lolwut.

...This is incredible Did you do the textures in Photochop? I love the materials for his eyes and the metal parts I don't feel like it's missing much without the fur, and it's worth it to have a more versatile model (that doesn't take 11 hours to render, lulz).

......plus, with fur you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between your model and the official model anymore

The BG is just perfect as well. Is there some Photoshop in there, or is it all 3DS?

You TOTALLY have to use this model in more scenes and stuff!! You need to model furniture and items and junk, then pose him with it. That would be so awesome.

Fave

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dave-Mastor In reply to kaourika [2009-01-19 02:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

The background is completely 3ds max, I had to toy around with the lighting and materials for a long time to get it just right.

The texture on the other hand, that was made in Photoshop; Daxter is one of the few models that I fully UV mapped.

I'll surely put him in more scenes; I'm going to do a little more work on the rigging first though, that and give him teeth.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kaourika In reply to Dave-Mastor [2009-01-19 22:46:05 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome

*shudder* UV mapping At least you got it done with though. Hmm, maybe filter forge has some kinda fur plugin you could use to add fuzz to his texture? Although I think it looks awesome as is

TEETH! Well, this should be interesting...

I don't really do commissions, but when I update my Daxter model in a bit, so it isn't so rigid, I'll do a Jay for you.

QueenToast [2009-01-18 16:52:30 +0000 UTC]

I am especially impressed by his goggles. The detail of the shine and the damage is wonderful!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dave-Mastor In reply to QueenToast [2009-01-18 20:44:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I really wanted to show an up close shot of the goggles, but I couldn't get that close without the textures low resolution becoming apparent; It was supposed to be the color map for the fur, so his fur wasn't all the same color, the fur was supposed to have all the detail in it, but when I couldn't get it to work... Well, you know.

Sanberg [2009-01-18 13:57:09 +0000 UTC]

Nifty stuff, it's a really good lookalike.
As for fur, I had the same problem with a model I made quite a while back. I was trying to make it too complicated. I ended up using the hair&fur generator included with max, just bumped up the hair count to millions, set the length to about 0.5 and let the underlying texture determine the colour, et voilΓ : [link]
Hope that helps.

Dave-Mastor In reply to Sanberg [2009-01-18 20:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Hey cool. But I bet that took ages to render right?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sanberg In reply to Dave-Mastor [2009-01-19 15:08:48 +0000 UTC]

hm, about 2-3 hours, on the pentium2 i had back then, I figure the process has been streamlined a bit by now, just a matter of tweaking till you find a reasonable balance between quality and the time you're willing to wait

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dave-Mastor In reply to Sanberg [2009-01-19 23:04:35 +0000 UTC]

You'd be surprised at how much it isn't streanlined... I don't think it's any better than a few years ago... It takes around... I'd say twenty minutes for 400K hairs to render on my 3.15Ghz Quad. And 400K isn't nearly enough for Dax...

But its sadly that you "maybe" CanΒ΄t make fur on him.. or its just taking too much of the expensive time we have. Whatever its a instant

I'm going to see what I can do about that fur, as it really would make him a lot better looking, and several people want it anyway.

Thanks! I still have to get his eye's to work properly, at the moment, they're kind of fixed in that position, unless I go in and move the verticies manually.
