Description N3N-3 Canary
The N3N was a two tandem-seat, open cockpit, primary training biplane built by the Naval Aircraft Factory (N.A.F.) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the 1930s. The N3N was the last biplane in US military service - the last (used by the U.S. Naval Academy for aviation familiarization) were retired in 1961. The N3N was also unique in that it was an aircraft designed and manufactured by an aviation firm wholly owned and operated by the U.S. government (the Navy, in this case) as opposed to private industry. For this, the Navy bought the rights and the tooling for the Wright R-760 series engine and produced their own engines. These Navy built engines were installed on Navy built airframes.

(Thanks to Nameless Faithless God for calling my attention to an error of mine - mis identifification of the aircraft as a Boeing Model 75 Stearman. They are similar but not the same.)

Actually what you have drawn here is not a Boeing Stearman at all. In fact it is a Naval Aircraft Factory N3N Canary. Which to be fair is a fairly similar aircraft to the Stearman. If you look, you have actually drawn the designation N3N-3 on the tail. This is not an aircraft serial number but the actual aircrafts designation.

Anyway it's a fine study of the aircraft regardless, and in many ways a more intriguing subject. After all most will have heard of the Stearman but not so many the N3N i would imagine.

I flew in one about 2 months ago over Greenville, SC. Perfect fall day. What a beautiful gentle flier. Not windy or noisy at all.
