Description This is sort of a silhouette gone awry. The somewhat unpredictable nature of infrared film (and some bracketing) left me with a little more detail than I had intended, but a softenss that I loved. After much pondering, and a careful check with Laura, I decided to go with it. It's now one of my favourite conventional infrared images.

your work is amazing; all of it plays with light in so many ways. Many photographer take lighting into account, but few honour light itself as you do.

DaveMc In reply to Severinn [2005-05-09 23:00:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Photography is really all about the light, so for me which lights you use is often more important than which camera.

i just shot myself this way last night... backlighting can really have an interesting effect... i hadn't though to do it with infared at all... but i may have to now. a very nice framing, and i don't think it would've worked as just a silhouette. i particularly like the blown out edges. the toning is also quite nice.

Thanks. The window is in a local studio so gets used a lot for model shots. The rooftops outside have become quite recognisable.

DaveMc In reply to blueye [2005-03-23 19:59:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The effect is called halation, and is a characteristic of this particular film. I causes bright highlights to "halo" and bleed into other areas of the image. That, and the unpredictabiliy of shooting light that you can't see makes working with HIE a constant source of surprises.

IncognitoGeek [2005-03-21 05:17:24 +0000 UTC]

I agree with your assessment... it does give off a soft glow that is unique and very warming. It should be a raunchy and naughty photo, because of her pose and the fact that you can see much of the detail... but it really isn't. Great stuff!

The face is haunting. I wonder what this would look like with a stained glass window behind her. Maybe something like you would see in a catholic church. The model also seems appropriate for the pose... her legs look muscular and steady. Like someone ready to stand their ground. The "fuzziness" works to her advantage.

Colors: very few colors, but still they are pretty well chosen

Space division+angle: this is actually one of the nicest things about this artwork, I like the way the girl blocks the view

Quality: too bad the image is not that sharp. it's also quite small. then again the lack of sharpness adds the flavor of mystery

Atmosphere+concept: somehow the first thing that came to my mind was "gothic". I also think that the title plays an important role

"Colors: very few colors, but still they are pretty well chosen"

Hmmmm..I don't think they were chosen...thats infra red film, you don't really 'choose' the colours....*rolling eye smiley*

DaveMc In reply to 72monkeys [2005-03-21 20:37:00 +0000 UTC]

This shot doesn't really lack sharpness in the traditional sense - focus is good and there's no motion blur. Kodak HIE is just very, very grainy, particularly when pushed to it's limits. It also doesn't have the anti-halation layer that normally prevents light bouncing around inside the film base. This results in the characteristlc "halo bloom" in infrared shots that is particularly evident around her head and arms. That's really what I love about it for shots like this.

yes, that's true. i had something else in mind, that is, the image itself, but of course, you're right

DaveMc In reply to 72monkeys [2005-03-23 07:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, OK. Sharpness is too much of a techincal issue in photography to ever mean anything else other than a lack of blur. And I'm also pretty literal minded...

Kodak HIE is strange stuff. It seems to respond very well to overexposure under certain conditions. You can see the same effect in Infrared Sunshine [link]
