When I did the (now largely abandoned) re-design of Starburst's costume a couple of years ago, one of the changes I wanted to make was in her bodysuit. Originally it was a blue bodysuit that left the arms and legs bare (the better to show off her spectacular muscularity), with white trim at the leg openings. Not to mention the star-shaped "boob window".

My redesign, seen here in New Starburst costume concept - red variation , did away with the white trim and modified the boob window. I also added the concept that, in contrast to the original design that had a bodysuit made out of simple blue fabric, the new bodysuit was made of an iridescent material that, although still perceived as dark blue overall, would sparkle with reflected light.

Since this "sparkly" property is the only thing to survive from the redesign, I wanted a way to visualize how that would look, so I made an animation test of it. Started it last night (11/3), hoping it'd only take an evening, and not keep me away from my other projects. (Well, things always seem to be more involved and time-consuming than I expected). Finished it late this afternoon (11/4). But I'm pretty pleased with how it looks, and with the concept of her costume sparkling like this.

Originally, my idea was that the "sparkliness" was just in internet property of the costume's fabric. But then, in a comment on Starburst cover mockup Version 3: Sleeves , brad328 wrote this:

"You could also tie all her abilities into something along the lines of her body being a cosmic energy battery and any of her abilities (strength, flight, durability, energy blasts) use some of that battery but some things (absorbing the force of a beam that could level a building, using her blasts, lifting something abnormally heavy or awkward...let's say an airplane) would tax it quicker. It could even be illustrated on her costume. The sparkle effect on her leotard could dim as her power levels decreased."

...which started me off on another possible revision concerning her powers. I like - no, I love! - the idea that the sparkle effect reflects her power level. (I have a whole explanation of her powers written up - I might post it in a journal soon. And thank you very much for the inspiration, Brad!)
