I wanted to draw a couple of sample pages of Starburst as much to give myself as anyone else an idea what Starburst and her supporting cast would look like in comics form. I didn't have a firm idea for an action scene I could do... but I did have what I thought was a fairly dramatic and character-revealing scene written for one of the stories that come after her origin and first adventure.

So, to set the scene: this happens about, I guess, two weeks after Cynthia Robinson gains her incredible powers, becomes Starburst, and almost single-handedly saves the world from extraterrestrial invaders. In the two weeks since, she's already gaining a reputation as a superheroine - stopping crime, rescuing people from natural disasters, etc. In her "civilian" identity, Cynthia works at the Space Center, as part of the "First Contact Protocol" office. Her boss, the grandfather Dr. John Russell, believes it important and useful to examine Starburst and test her powers, their goal being to find out how her powers work, and how exactly she gained them. But one of the other "First Contact" staff, the decidedly-not-grandfatherly Dr. Devin Mortham, has his own agenda for the testing of Starburst: he wants to destroy her for her part in spoiling his ambitions during the alien invasion.

At this point, then, Cynthia/Starburst thinks of Dr. Mortham as simply obnoxious and egotistical, unaware that Dr. Mortham is already drawing up his plans for her destruction.

With that in mind, go ahead and read Starburst - sample pg 1 first, then this one.

This was a challenge because of all the dialogue. I wanted to fit it all in two pages, because three would've been too long to make the reader wait before something happens. But I'm not happy with the way I suddenly crammed a lot of it into small panels at the end of the page; yet I couldn't pace the dialogue any other way. Well, it'll be awhile before this scene appears in an "official" comic, so maybe by then I will have decided to expand it to three pages just to let the second half of the page breathe a little. Especially the last three panels, which show Starburst "changing clothes" as a signal that the conversation is over, and she's back to being Cynthia Robinson again.
