Description Gotta love this Chieftain crew, they stayed engaged with the audience. Most likely with a round of HE. I'm assuming that's what you used to deal with an audience.  Taken at TankFest 2015's Armour Parade.
Bovington, UK

I dont mean to be a killjoy but thats not a Centurion, thats a Chieftain Mk5. They have a searchlight in the box you can see on the right of the turret, theres also a small searchlight on the commanders cupola, the hatch with all the periscopes on the top left of the turret. The reason for this was updates meant thermal observation Gunners Sights (TOGS) replaced the searchlight towards the end of its service life. This would later be installed on the Challenger 1 MBT but the Canadian Army trophy '87 made the old TOGS obsolete. It performed poorly against the Abrams M1 and Leo 2 but........proved itself in the 1st Gulf War, taking away the longest tank-on-tank kill ever on record and still hasn't been broken. Its sights were still more advanced then those of the T-55, T-65 and T-72s of the time. The Director of the Royal Armoured Corps said "its a tank built to win wars not to win competitions". but good photo non-the-less

N.B: it was introduced in 1966 and the last Chieftain left UK service in 1995. It is still operated by Iran, Jordan and Oman forces. A good run for any tank.

My dad served on these beasties, he would've been disappointed if I hadn't said something lol. The Chieftain was the first tank my old man served on, the Challenger 2 (before the rushed upgrades after 2006) was his last.

I understand, I can be the same way about aircraft. My Dad and I both worked in Naval aviation.

The Chieftain crew looked to be enjoying themselves the whole time, though I got them mixed up with the Centurion because they look similar at a distance.

The saying from fury "the best job I ever had" id love their job, even getting stuck into the engine bay would be something Id love to do. But they do look similar, its the little things that give it away. I the term keyed by the British Army is "spotter" lol.

Good eye. I was thinking the same thing. I'm the same way with warships since I'm one of several generations of Navy vets but I'm still learning heh.

Ok so have to ask. What are your favorite AFVs?

Apart from the Challenger 2, it has to be the Merkava series MBT and the FV107 Scimitar CVRT. The Merkava can be adapted to carry troops, which is good because you're bringing your own support with you rather then waiting around for it. The Scimitar because its small, fast and can hold its own if it has to. A very good recce vehicle and will be sorely missed when the MkII gets replaced by the ASCOD sorry I mean the Scout SV.

Merkava is one of my favorite class of MBTs. The modular armor system, threat sensor systems, and design are very unique. She's been an effective main battle tank and served the IDF well. The 7th Armored Brigade used Merkava's very effectively during the wars. I love that she's has the loadout option for organic troops. There was an article that stated that IDF armored warfighters would use the assault compartment to stow more ammunition heh. Makes sense though.

Oh that's the Scimitar. I like the design. They look like their airborne capable with their small logistics lift footprint.

I was looking up the data profile for the Scout SV and General Dynamic's UK said there are six variants. I wonder if it's a modular weapons platform that can be adapted to specific mission requirements as needed. It reminds me of the F35 and its modular design. I remember reading about the interest in modular design doctrine that was being discussed during the Cold War in the 80s.

I love the A41 Centurion because it's history's first purpose built MBT though Panther is being reconsidered as the first. I'm biased toward the Centurion though heh.

Hmmm modern day favorites would have to be the Merkava as well and M2A2 Bradley IFV for armored fighting vehicles. Have to admit though there is something appealing about the USMC's LAV25 AFV and the USA's Striker because of their adaptable designs. The Striker in particular because it employs the L7 rifle in its tank hunter variant and the L7 has a special place in my heart because of it's connection to the A41 and the IDF's specific tank sniper training doctrine once they modified the A41 into the Sho't for their mission operation requirements.

Yeah love armor heh =^^=

I think the IDF rewrote a few things in armour warfare, one being that numbers don't mean much if you know how to use your equipment to its full potential. Yom Kappur war saw to that lol. You should read books written by Basil H. Liddle-Hart, John F. C. Fuller, Heinz Guderian and Erwin Rommel, then see if you can find anything on the tactics used in the Yom Kappur War. These wrote and adapted the rules of armoured warfare from the Mk.I tank to the present. Then if you get a chance, read H. G. Wells Little Wars.

Yep, its pretty much a go-anywhere platform, can be under slung by Chinnook or transported 2 at a time by C-130 though you might get 4 in a C-17 globemaster. But its 50+ years old now so its due to be replaced by the Scout SV. Well the UK is buying 3 variants, 2 variants can be fitted for 3 roles each whilst the 3rd is fitted for 2 roles. It all involves reconnaissance to a degree but theres command and liaison, troop transport, armoured reconnaissance (the turreted version) and forward observation. Ill be watching it closely and seeing how it performs.

Well the panther was really only used to be a tank killer where as the Centurion was used for the first purpose built Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineer (AVRE) and Universal Tank or later Main Battle Tank. Im not sure if it ever got adapted for the bridge layer role but I know the Chieftain did and the Armoured Repair and Recovery Vehicle (ARRV) was introduced. Something that could pull 55 tons of steel beast out of sticky soggy mud trenches lol.

See i liked the AAV-7 AmTrac, it takes alot to impress me in terms of US equipment and that certainly makes the mark. A troop carrier thats amphibious and carriers 25 troops and has a turret with a 25mm cannon and coax. See the Scorpion CVRT family had the option for floats but the British Army didnt want them. Could have been used in the Falklands but meh they still used 4 Scimitars in that war, manned by B Squadron Blues and Royals Regiment. An MBT in the Falklands would have been a nightmare. An 8 ton tracked vehicle against a 55ton monster in boggy conditions, its better to use the lighter vehicle lol.
