That is an AMAZING Doctor Doom! The composition here is incredible. I love the slight Kirby-crackle effects, too..

No offense to anyone else on the book, but your covers are what made me pick it up again. CHEERS!

Thank you, although I did base my re-design somewhat on his last revamp.

I will stick to my opinion that guys with blades never work in comics if they are not allowed to actually damage people severely (Dark Reign - The List: Punisher, one exceptional exception). Wolverine gets his chance sometimes but in comics blades generally cut nothing but air or clothes or leave mere scratches, no matter how hardcore or precise the blade wielder is. Even worse if the wielding hand comes so close to an object that only the editorial mandate keeps the extended blades from slicing this object in two, ignoring all laws of logic and physics.

The cover is great, David, no doubt about it and I'm a big fan of your covers for X-Factor(!), but it saddens me that an otherwise great piece of art suffers from Marvel's illogical design decisions.

Thanks.

I think you're reading a little too much into it the blade thing though. I wasn't given editorial mandate saying no impaling of Doom, or anything like that; the design decisions were made by me.

The reasons Shatterstar isn't doing any real damage to Doom is because I wanted to keep the characters on an equal standing in the fight, and also I don't know what exactly happens inside the book, so there's is no real point in me having Shatterstar carve up Doom.

I have no objection to characters cutting, slicing, carving, impaling, chopping, or otherwise butchering each other... as long as there is a valid reason for doing so, and it works.

Thanks for the clearifying reply.
What I mean with "editorial mandate" is rather the general censoring of T+ books by Marvel and other publishers that prohibits cutting and slicing. It's so irritating an idea that you have to have characters with any kind of blades in comic books but you can't have them actually do damage in 90% of the cases due to age rating. Energy blasts always work because of their ambivalent physical nature but if you get to the real-life scenario of a knife fight universal censoring makes it, actally, comical in most cases.

It looks like you have a pretty free reign over your covers. I recall covers with villains standing over piles of lifeless heroes, while those scenes do not happen in the books themselves. There it seems that the artists altered the "reality" of the books quite a bit, be it due to request or their own sense of marketing.

Shatterstar looks as good as longshot SHOULD.

That chick looks like Jakita Wagner . . . but it's . . . uhm . . . M, right?

This arc sounds good! I'll have to check it out.

Thanks. I was surprised too when he was introduced a few issues back, but he can be a cool character to draw.

Hey man, digging the new Shatterstar costume design and the other costumes also rock!!
(you did mention you did the new designs if I'm not completely mistaken)
Very cool and I really hope that they stay for a looooong time!

I kinda hate that all the x-characters costumes change every time they put someone new on the x-books. But these are sweet and should stay

davidyardin In reply to sean-izaakse [2009-11-17 16:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Yeah I did all the costume designs on X-Factor. Changes are inevitable, and usually come with creative team changes... which is pretty often considering not many people stay on for long runs any more. These should be around for a little while anyway.

sean-izaakse In reply to davidyardin [2009-11-18 11:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I get what you're sayin. But it seems to only really happen in the X-books. I mean most of the Avengers and Spidey stay the same. Guess they're more iconic.
Yeah definitely hope these costumes stick around
I even did a Shatterstar re-design ages ago [link] but yours is WAY cooler. I struggle to come up with cool modern takes and thinking outta the box when it comes to designs, I am however tryin to change that
