Heh, I live in Maine. So yes, Moose. Moose everywhere. Hopefully you had a good stay here. Bar Harbor is really nice, but I imagine was rather cold at this time of year as well. Did you stay in the Bar Harbor Hotel per chance?

We go up every September.. have been for several years.. we start in York and wander up the coast.. usually stay in Baileys Island Glen cove and then up at the Seaview on Hull's Cove..and hang around Bar Harbor /Acadia area for a couple of days.. and then reverse down ending up in York again on the end of the week.. our house in Conn is only 4 hours from York.. We had a wonderful week of weather.. it was great..

Quite a week then. I live in Central Maine, Piscataquis County, so it's much less exciting where I live. I'm typically a tourist in my own state. I enjoy looking for Moose as much as anyone else. Ever been to York Zoo? The Zoo part is really nice, but the Amusement Park part is sort of run down looking. If you ever go to Mt. Vernon or so, I definitely recommend going to D.E.W. Animal Kingdom. If you're into Zoos and all that.

There's a pretty good one at the Catskill Game
farm.. Im in southern Fairfield County CT.. I work about 60 miles east of NY .I used to live way up in Watertown NY and Syracuse.. ..I've been to quite a few places... When we lived in Anchorage there were moose running around on the base all the time.. right by our school.. it was cool

Ah yes, moose. Gotta love the Moose in New England. It usually brightens my day to see excited tourists eagerly jumping out of their parked vehicles to get a good look at a Moose.
Luckily Moose are typically very lax and don't attack too much. Unless it's mating season.
All in all, once people get over the accent crap it's pretty nice here. I just tire of tourists going crazy because a lot of people "forget their r's".

Oh gosh yeah, if you're going to go messing with wildlife at least make sure you know what season it is! Otherwise your vacation is gonna end with a moose antler in your back.

Aha, well I don't really mind the accent thing. It's dying out actually. Now the only people with the accent are either members of the older generations or the extreme boonies-dwelling families that are off about the woods. The younger generation is adopting a rather plain accent. Myself included.

I've always loved listening to old New Englanders.. all the areas have a distinct old accent..here included and you rarely hear it much these days..

my Dad was born in Maine - so i get the accent most of the time

about the wind -

when the vain points to North/East is it called a Noreaster? or is a Noreeaster coming out of the northeast blowing southwest?

i never did understand it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

davincipoppalag In reply to Cmac13 [2010-10-11 12:59:33 +0000 UTC]

It refers to the direction the wind is originating from..so yes.. a northeast wind blows south west .. N'orEastuh! lol.. My grandfather was from Lewiston Maine.

Cmac13 In reply to davincipoppalag [2010-10-11 13:22:14 +0000 UTC]

so - the weather vain points southwest during a N'orEastuh do i have that right?

i see it Lewiston - just south of Lake Aubourn?

My dad was born in Bath and grew up in Augusta - we spent many a happy vacation - summer and winter in Augusta and all that lobster - my mouth waters when i think of it

davincipoppalag In reply to Cmac13 [2010-10-11 13:25:35 +0000 UTC]

Yea thats where Lewiston is.. Bath area is cool.. Baileys Island is just to the northeast .. sounds like nice vacations

Well wind direction is very important to sailboats.. you have to determine your course on how you're going to set the sails with respect to the wind

Not really, we don't all talk like that. Very few of us do in fact. Anyone doing so is just doing it to pull your leg. I'm really tired of the crap we get based on an accent.

Aeltari In reply to Steampunk-Desperado [2010-10-12 03:37:10 +0000 UTC]

Aww don't take it hard. Im Canadian...you probably know the crud we get about accents, about living in igloos, how we don't have summer etc. People don't realize they have an accent. It takes an outsider to notice it. I used to vacation in NH and Maine so long ago, and I always noticed it, and they said that I sounded funny too

Steampunk-Desperado In reply to Aeltari [2010-10-12 10:31:57 +0000 UTC]

Meh, it's not so much people having one that bothers me so much as it's people who try to mimic it and act like we're all hillbillies with no proper education in the English Language. Which is how it turns out a lot.
Oh god yeah, Canadian accents as well. Those get a lot of crap too. I dated someone from Canada but I never noticed an accent. One of the few perhaps?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeltari In reply to Steampunk-Desperado [2010-10-12 11:40:53 +0000 UTC]

It is location based. There are areas here that have accents so strong WE have a hard time with it. North of me is Newfoundland and there they have very odd accents. People who were born and raised out west swear they can identify an easterner. Of course speaking of hillbillies, westerners have a strange prejudice towards anything east of them. They lump everyone together under the unkind moniker of "newfies". Newfie jokes are like blond jokes, based around being dumb We had moved out west for a time and you can imagine how I suffered. The very 'backwoods' Albertans had a field day with this blond east coast girl and I never made a single friend or fitted in. I guess this sort of garbage occurs everywhere, in any country sadly.

Steampunk-Desperado In reply to Aeltari [2010-10-12 19:15:16 +0000 UTC]

Gah, that sounds a lot worse than what we get here. I mean we have some pretty harsh things about us as well but not usually stuff like that. I admit I'm not really "up to date" on what other insults other countries get, but that's just harsh. I'm blond so I get hillbilly jokes AND dumb blond jokes.
