Description     Elizabeth practically ran down the streets, across backyards and back roads until she reached the wooded area. She ran her hands along the trees smiling peacefully. She patted herself on the back for her brilliant marksmanship in making the discreet Indian markings that would lead her to the hollow, as her and James called it. Indian, or rather Native American, things had always caught her attention and interest. She felt like she could’ve been one if the time called for it… “I could’ve been one.” She repeated quietly to herself.

She caught her breath as she strolled to the hollow where she removed the leaves and stick doorway and looked down the dark hole. She grabbed the flashlight out of her backpack and putting it in her mouth began climbing down. When she reached the light of the camping lantern in the bottom she was surprised to find James already there.

“Hey, babe,” he greeted with his usual charm. Elizabeth smiled dropping her small bag, “Hey James.”

“Hey, have I kissed you yet?” He teased. She blushed, “Yeah, why?”

“Because I never know if I’m dreaming or not,” he smiled with a wink. She rolled her eyes,

“You’re such a mess.”

“How do you want to do this without it being awkward?” He laughed.

“Do what? I thought we were just going to talk?” Elizabeth asked innocently, she loved making James squirm and explain things.

“Just come over here,” he said getting on his knees and straightening out the rugs and blankets on the ground. The butterflies rushed and she took her most daring steps forward.

--

James already felt his heart pounding in his chest as she came closer. This was his favorite part each time, reminding who he was, watching her acceptance—she always did after a minute or two, it was in her nature. Just like the first time… She sat across from him and he decided to make the first move gentle and painless. He took her face in his hands and started with a simple kiss at her lips before moving to the rest of her face and her neck, drawing her close, he could hear her heart pounding faster and faster. He almost wanted to cry as he held her, the only person whom he’d ever loved…

“James?” Elizabeth breathed quietly. He quickly composed himself, “Yeah?”

“Are you okay?”she pulled away to look into his eyes. She cautiously put her hand on his
face and his breath shook, only she could do this to him…

He took her hand, his thoughts racing, “Liz, there’s something I need to tell you…”

---

Dragan strode confidently through the trees, he was going to get her back, he had to. He knew he wasn’t supposed to kill James but he had made sure to keep himself wired so he wouldn’t talk himself out of it. The vampire would die at his hands. His appearance was already shifting into the beast as he came closer to their scent.

---

“You’re joking, right?” Elizabeth laughed backing away from James’s serious stare. A vampire? That was just like him. He crawled closer, looking more serious than ever.

“I’m not joking this time, Elizabeth, I’m really a vampire. I crossed seas of time just for you,” he reached for her hand. She withdrew straining her eyebrows as if it would help her process this.

“James’s you’re so dumb,” she said though the words had no meaning to them as she stared at him. In his eyes she began to feel herself slip into a trance she finally realized and jumped up.

“No!” she put a hand over her mouth, silently trying to scream, “has all of this been a lie?”

“No, no!” He jumped up, coming closer, “Of course not, I love you, Elizabeth, and you
really love me, don’t you?”

“Do I even know the real you?” She could almost feel déjà vu radiating in the room.

“Most of me, except well this isn’t my real appearance, it’s an illusion I’ve been using to get to be your friend, to have us fall in love again.”

“What do you really look like?” She wondered, her nerves calming as she came to terms with the ordeal as if she had to. He sighed and closed his eyes for a second and Elizabeth watched as he became older and even more handsome, his blonde hair lengthening and blue eyes darkening to crimson. Even more fascinating were his increased height and muscle growth. He did look like he came from another time…

“Wow…” She breathed.

“Are you okay with this?” he asked.

“Of course, I mean it took me a second but I can deal with the fact that my best friend
is a vampire,” she began to laugh though she had begun to shake and shiver uncontrollably.

“It’s okay, Liz,” he walked slowly to her, hands up as if in surrender until he got close enough to pull her into a hug and then kiss her again, “It’s okay…”
Elizabeth kissed back unsure of what else she could do. Before she knew it, he had picked her up and carried her back to the rug and laid her on her back, crawling on top of her… “I love you,” she murmured.

“I love you too,” he said, his voice gruff as he held on to her tightly. Elizabeth tensed as he lowered his head to her neck…What is happening?

--

Dragan could sense her now. He sped up until he stood above the doorway. He felt his pants leg to make sure the wooden stake was still there. When he realized it was secure he began to stealthily remove the door.

--

James felt so empowered and happy as he kissed Elizabeth, held her, felt her… Nothing could ruin this except—he froze catching the scent of another immortal—the dog. He clutched Elizabeth tighter than needed, internally cursing as he tried to catch his breath.

--

“What’s wrong?” Elizabeth asked still kissing at James’s neck and rubbing his bare masculine arms. He had stopped suddenly and turned his head to the doorway. She stopped to and rested her head to stare at his brilliant crimson eyes, “James?”

His head snapped back unnaturally quick, “Yes?”

She did all she could not to jump as she repeated, “Is something wrong?”
He didn’t reply instead cradled her head in his large hands and pulled her to his lips.

--

Dragan crawled down into the hallow to be greeted by James on top of his mate, both of them topless, embracing. The feeling in his heart was indescribable as the beast turned his cracking heart to stone. They would both pay, he thought.
His mate turned her head and froze staring into his eyes. The eyes of a monster, but she’d seemed to accept the even more horrid eyes of James. Unless, he’d manipulated her mind again, he realized. His gaze turned to James’s who sighed as if he was only simply annoyed or bored,

“Can’t you just stay away for one lifetime?” He asked.

“Oh yeah, you’re going to die,” Dragan laughed pulling out his wooden stake.

“You know you can’t do that, mutt,” James snarled, “but feel free to watch.”

Dragan had almost completely changed, he lunged at James, “Bastard!”

--

Elizabeth watched helplessly confused as the monster came at them. She clutched onto James but when she looked up she said he was thrown against the wall as roots came from the ground and tied him up. His eyes met with hers, she was scared now and looked to James who now stood.

“James, what is this?” She asked since she couldn’t understand.

“This is the man who’s responsible for your demise,” he answered.

“What?” She asked her heartbeat quickening. She had to be dreaming, this was all just a
bad dream. Wake up, she thought, wake up!
She decided to be quick, forgetting her shirt on the floor that James had recklessly thrown, she sprinted to the doorway. But as she approached the dirt shifted and the doorway disappeared. Now she began to hyperventilate and panic and she turned to James.

“You can’t leave now, babe, the fun is just beginning.”
