Description Sorry to post more old stuff so soon (I try to space them out), but I couldn't sit on this any longer.

This one isn't strictly Broken Glass, but it is relevant!

So, the attempt to recover the initial scene around which Broken Glass' plot grew ended in me realizing I was after the wrong computer the entire time.  We still had the G3 iMac, but it didn't have any drawings on it at all.  The first scene of Broken Glass was made on a computer I had forgotten about: a Windows computer my dad got through his work around 2007, which I eventually gave to a friend who moved away around 2014.

However, upon dumping out a couple boxes of old stuff, I found some notebooks I had "lost."  Including a green chub notebook with this scene in it.

The page after this scene is unrelated (a drawing of an OC called Redfoot), and the story never picks up again.

Okay, where to begin?

The thing that surprised me most is that apparently, there was no third thing Jumper and Hoot had done.  I guess I thought "three times" would sound more important and grand?  The "twice" definitely refers to their failures at headquarters and the barn.

Jumper and Hoot are called by the wrong names here.  I think I was aware that Snake had the sticking-out teeth, but I probably thought Snake was Jumper and Ice was Hoot because that's the order they tend to be addressed in (Snake and Ice, Jumper and Hoot).

I think the lack of teeth in several of the collars was a mistake, because there doesn't seem to be a reason for it, and it isn't consistent.

I like how you can see I originally gave Hoot sticking-out teeth on page one.  I'm not sure which explanation makes the most sense: that I originally (correctly) thought Hoot was the one with the teeth, then changed my mind; that I originally wanted Jumper to be the one speaking, then decided to have Hoot say the line because he was the main character; or that I simply forgot not to draw the teeth.

In panel three, the crossed out bit in "He's kind" was clearly originally supposed to say, "He was kind."  I guess I realized Hoot would, at this point, be aware that Barley was still alive out there somewhere.

I think the deterioration on page four is supposed to indicate a fuzzy memory/the end of the flashback, but it mostly just makes me think of man door hand hook car door.  It seems likely that I had wanted to write Scourge's actual quote but didn't have the book immediately on hand.  Alternatively, maybe the line underneath "punish" is supposed to be crossing it out (it looks like I may have run out of room to write the whole word "punishment"), and it actually says, "What better punishment...sister die..." which, while still incomplete, is at least coherent.

I have no idea what the conclusion of this story was going to be.  I remember that it was about Jumper and Hoot surviving in Twolegplace despite being enemies of BloodClan.  My guess is that I became uninterested in the comic after failing to come up with a satisfying climax to the plot.

I think the reason no one has any markings is that I had planned to ink the pages later.

This is actually far enough back that the cats don't appear cross-eyed.  (Yes I am aware of this aspect of my current art.  No I will not attempt to do anything about it.)

A Clan in Need, the final book of the Ravenpaw's Path trilogy, was released in August 2010, giving the earliest possible time for this comic to have been made.  In late 2010 I would have been in sixth grade.  Based on Redfoot on the next page, the lack of crossed eyes on the cats, the laser fox on one of the final pages of the notebook, and the fantasy-creature revamp of a different Warriors fanfiction (and, in particular, the extent to which they look like wolves, which was toned down over time in favor of squirrels), the earlier half of sixth grade sounds like a completely reasonable estimate.

For the curious:

- Redfoot, later Redstar, comes from the same universe as Crimson ( www.deviantart.com/dawnsilence…).  Redstar came to power as WindClan leader through deceit and murder, then made a bid for absolute rule of the whole forest by joining a Clan (ZebraClan) made by traitors from other Clans.  He died an utter failure and was mocked for a generation, then forgotten entirely by history.

Redfoot showed up in a comic I made in sixth grade based on the game, called Dappled Leaves.  He was the deputy of WindClan and never actually became leader.  (The leader of WindClan in this comic was named Firestar.  In the original game Firestar led FlameClan, which was like WindClan but in grass so tall they hardly saw the sky, and he and Redstar were in power at the same time.)  He joined a group called the Warriors of the Night, which was the comic's equivalent of ZebraClan.  Because he didn't die onscreen, he returned in the sequel that I never finished.

- The laser fox was based on the Marlfoxes from Redwall.  It's...I mean, it's basically a Marlfox ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlfox), but navy blue, with a laser on its forehead.  The laser is in an intricate shape, like some sort of fancy rune inscribed on its face, and each fox has a unique laser shape.  The laser foxes are from late sixth grade.  It was created with the intent of being a Pokémon, but I didn't know anything about Pokémon.

- The other Warriors fanfiction mentioned above had six books planned, and I actually finished writing the first one in sixth grade before almost immediately deciding to remake it with fantasy creatures.  The series was called Three United, an artifact of the time when it was about three cats going on a quest together, even though it had been changed to be about eight.

Page 1:
Willie, to Minty: There they are.
Hoot: It's just, I um, we, well...
Snapper: Oh, really?

Page 2:
Willie: That's twice you've failed us.
Snapper: I'm gonna enjoy this.
Jumper and Hoot run away.

Page 3:
Only one panel, a picture of Hoot.
Hoot's narration: I'm Hoot.  The difference between Barley and me?  He's kind.  Jumper and me?  I've left the past behind me.

Page 4:
Hoot's narration: Or at least, tried to.
The following panels have squiggly borders to indicate a flashback.
Barley: No, Scourge!  It's my fault!  Punish me!
Scourge: Of course.
There is another panel with squiggly borders, but there is no picture inside it.
Scourge: What better punish punishment...sister die?..
At the bottom of the page is what appears to be the beginning of a drawing of Jumper.

It's nice seeing the origin of Broken Glass, and how much the story has changed in the last 8-9 years. Also, I remember Dappled Leaves, though not Redfoot! The art style you did that comic in was interesting.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you remember Dappled Leaves, but I am anyway!  That story was pretty fun but also kind of a mess.  (If it jogs your memory, Redfoot was a ginger colorpoint (Siamese) with green eyes and dark red word color.  I think he got kicked off the Great Rock.)

I wish I had more saved from this story.  I think I have one other drawing of Snake and Ice somewhere in my boxes of art, but that’s about it.

Ah, now I can picture him in my head. Lol, he was a bad kitty.

Ah well, that's what happens with time I guess. At least you've still got some of the stuff
