the bokeh / depth of field is pretty strong, hides too much of the texture and modeling, makes almost the entire thing just look blurred.

Thanks for commenting. I've been experimenting with DoF a lot lately. But, the bigger problem here, is that honestly this is just not that good of a character. This was actually the first next-gen character I ever made, so the textures and sculpting are soft and mushy to begin with.

hey man, its not that bad for a first try!
There a plenty of great artists out there providing resources to get your sculpting up to speed for the next / current gen pipeline, including tips on making successful presentations for portfolio entry that will really show off your model in the best light (no pun intended) possible. For starters, I would have a very slight DOF effect, especially if you do a turn table video reel
