A while back I drew the snake kids from the Kiesha’ra book series: www.deviantart.com/dead-raccoo…

And I was challenged to do a companion piece for the hawk kiddos. I also threw in their parents - Nacola and Curtis - because why the heck not??
I really like how Nacola turned out - haughty but well-meaning. I don’t think she would have been so chilly if her children didn’t drop like flies. I like to think she mellowed a bit when she became a grandma and especially when Sive was born. (I mean, she lets the kid attend serpiente dances for heavens’ sake!)
Curtis is only referenced in the books (and barely that). I like to think of him as a war-weary but gentle father. He came out looking a tad like Snape which I kinda like.
As for Mara, we don’t meet her and it’s unclear how close she and Danica were. (Certainly not as close as Dani and Rei, BUT eh) I like to think Dani was quite worshipful of her big sis. I imagine Mara tried to fulfill that role of nurturer that Nacola abandoned. (I mean the lady was in a war that was destroying her friends and family. Give her a break for being a bit callous!)
I know casual touch among the avians is a bit taboo, but I drew Dani and Mara snuggling because Dani does seem a bit more open to expression than other birds (she takes to dance rather fast) and I think the rules may bend a bit for the very young. (Mara died before Danica reached adolescence.)
And poor Xavier. What a wasted life. I think of him like Carson of the Cobriana line. A poor kid whose life is squandered by war. But it was his death and Gregory’s that ultimately brought about the change and peace. Also he looks like a hobbit here for some reason.
Anyway, I going to go sob uncontrollably now. Bye.
