I've heard its a myth about any animal refusing to care for it's young just because you have touched them.

This is beautifulβ™₯β™₯

I miss having bunny babies :]

I've heard it both ways.
We handled Blue's (the mother of these little guys) previous litter from day one and all six of her babies grew up beautifully and used to human contact and attention (i.e. great pets. )
You've raised baby bunnies?

My rabbit had two litters.
One the day after my boyfriend gave her (along with her brother who was thought to be female...) to my daughter and I as a gift, and one more the year after that when my daughter let the dad&mom rabbit out of their cages...at the same time. lol. incest bunnies <.<

we handled them since they were tiny babies and they all grew up very calm and gentle pets.

I only have the mom and one of her sons from the first litter now though :]
and he is neutered, so no more babies.

I hope you have rubbed your hand in the litter you are using, because if you haven't the mother might stop feeding them after you took them out :/ All in all you should take them out only to check whether they are being fed and only for a very, very short time when the mother isn't near.

I hope they grow up well and live a long life.

If the mother is friendly and used to her owners and their scent, then she shouldn't mind her babies being handled. Handling the babies every day for health checks is fine, and helps them get used to human contact from a young age; so they should grow up to not mind people as much. You shouldn't hold them for too long as they can get cold easily from hairlessness, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them picking up your scent if the mother knows you.

It is true that wild baby bunnies should not be handled however, as the mother my abandon them in this case.

The way you explained it it makes totally sense.
I have no experience in that field, what I wrote was just what I have heard from other people, so thank you for your explanation

Well that's okay! ^^
Before I looked into it I thought the same thing too, don't worry. One of my bunnies had a litter last year so I researched everything I could about newborn bunnies and how to care for them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dead-Raccoons In reply to bluebauble [2013-04-15 15:26:41 +0000 UTC]

Haha! Yep, those are rabbits. Baby rabbits don't really start to look like buns until their fur comes in and they start to fluff up. Right now, they look a bit like alien kittens. Cute alien kittens.

Their parents are Blue, our American doe, and our gigantic New Zeland buck named Beowulf. So these little guys should grow up to be big, very big guys. But probably very sweet guys. Blue likes people (even though she detests other rabbits) and Beowulf is just a big sweetheart.

Haha! Yeah, baby buns are pretty floppy-skinned when they're infants. When they get older, they go through a stage known affectionately as "the fuzzies."

tigerwhiskers In reply to Dead-Raccoons [2013-04-15 14:59:52 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dead-Raccoons In reply to tigerwhiskers [2013-04-15 15:02:09 +0000 UTC]

No, not yet. I don't want to name them until they get a bit older and show their personalities - that's pretty much my standard with pets. And, trust me, buns have some major personalities.
