First, I want to apologize for the late response
I've been on vacation in Athens for a bit less than a week.. but, now I'm back again 8D
Let me tell you a bit about Hetalia and you will understand the fact with the axe and other things even better...
I admit that I don't know everything about Hetalia because I haven't seen the whole Axis Powers Hetalia or read the comic strips... but I can tell you a bit about it
You see, Hetalia is not just the Axis Powers Hetalia anime. There's also the World Series anime. And then, there's the main thing, Himaruya's (the inventor of Hetalia) manga strips. Himaruya often scribbles and draws his Hetalia characters and he makes Halloween and Christmas specials and random strips. Yes, it's true that Denmark doesn't show up often in the Anime, but he often shows up in the comic strips, along with the other Nordics, like in this year's halloween special. ([link] Click on the number links to read the comic, the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10a - 10b, 11, 12a - 12b - 12c" ones ovo under these numbers, the halloween special continues. It's constantly updated, that's why it's build up like that xD) He makes an awesome ghost pirate, don't you think? 8D
About Denmark's axe: [link] This is one of Himaruya's pictures of Denmark... yeah, and there's the axe. It fits Denmark quite well and his violent and rough behavior is a result of Denmark's history. You know, Viking and everything. xD Plundering. Suppressing other countries.
Denmark is more the comic-character in Hetalia, because you don't often see him in the anime, so you should search in Himaruya's strips to find out more about him. Most of them are translated. Oh, and then there's the actual Fandom... The Fanart of Hetalia! It's what makes Hetalia REALLY awesome, because really great artists have drawn really great pictures about Hetalia~ and there's a lot of Denmark in FanArt.
