The head especially is amazingly realistic - at the same time there is a distinct sense that it has been drawn, and painstakingly. It's actually quite refreshing to find a piece in Digital Art>Animals that doesn't just look like someone smudged over a photo. Fantastic work!

The texturing and softer focus makes the peahen look much more alive than the cassowary, which looks digitally painted at first glance. I have to look very closely at this one to detect any hint of painting. (If you're curious, I think the slight hatching over the nostril and on top of the beak give it away, but I haven't seen the reference, so I could be wrong.) Incredible job!

I think it's sweet! Also: Is this a female peacock or just a strange coloration I haven't seen before? I don't remember if the females have the little crests or not.

Yes, 'tis a female. Their little crests are more brownish, and the neck coloration varies from plainer to more vibrant among individuals.
