Edit: Changed the bg a little to make it look less hectic. Thanks a lot for your advice ^^My picture for the OC-contest I was talking about previously.
Now that she is done I can work on her backgroundstory and the references

I'm not a fan of walloftextcritique so I'll keep it brief.
First and foremost the coloring technique is splendid and superbly done. The costume and weapon design reflects a celestial theme that works well. The wings, her pose, and the background give the impression "Take Flight!" which I like the best from this work.
However, the flight pose feels a little weird since she is leading forwatd, while her wing position is flapping, in which her body must lean backward. Other thing to point is that the shield looks small, yet her left palm is not visible.
Other than that, again, it is a wonderful artwork!

First impression on this piece is stunning! The colour palette and scheme really work well with this character and brings her to life!
Good/Great
- Her wings are stunning and the bright glow of them really make them stand out. Your eye is drawn to them and they look really well done.
-the lineart is thin and sutle, and you don't see much of it making you see more of the character. You see a lot of work where the lineart is just too thick and takes your eye away, but this lineart is sutle and very amazing.
-Her hair really feelings like hair. It flows and changes shade at a constant light source which makes it seem more real, but coloured in a way that makes it stay in the anime category e.deviantart.com/emoticons/w/w⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
-Her outfit is very original and somewhat sexy looking, making her very appealing for anyone to look at!

Some improvement
-the background is just too busy. Even with the glow around the character, her body kind of gets lost in the complexity of the background. Maybe make the background darker will make the character pop more. The focus is on her and it being all those mixes of dark colours and designs makes your eye pull away from her.
-The sword is slightly bent in the middle making it seem like the sword might slide apart. but it's a slight thing and not a major notice.
-Her waist, proportionately is off; it seems way too thin for how wide her hips and legs are. Widing her waist a tad would fix that look. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
-Her eye is pointed a bit too the right side, and it makes her look like her one eye isn't facing the same direction as her right eye. moving it slightly to the left and point a bit more will fix that
This piece is amazing though, it was hard to find and real issues that weren't just minor technical things. The only thing major is the background, and more the darker blends of different designs. Only serious thing i can see that needs changing.
But the character herself is absolutely amazing! It's very well done!

I think otherwise for the background. The complexion of the background actually gives a really good impression for me and it is quite comfortable in my eyes. The previous background really bring out the elegant side of the character as well. It is not always bad to give a little bit of attention to the background, but this is just my opinion.

everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just the contrast of blacks and blues and the over all complexity of the previous background just seemed off compared to her beautiful character in front. They didn't match; having a different style background then the character in front doesn't make it flow as well or look natural.
I didn't mean the over all complexity really took away from it (i should've specified) but the actual design was different then the character so they didn't match as well as the new background. You can have complex and awesome backgrounds, but they have to match your style of character in the front or something just doesn't look right.
But this one now looks natural and fits with her character more. It's not a simple background, far from it, but works well with the design of the character.
anyway, thats my reasoning for my opinion

If you ask my opinion, it doesn't make the flow better either. The background doesn't need to be very detailed, but I thought a softer colour would actually bring the character out better. Yes, a simpler background would be better, but darker and harder colours couldn't help much but still avert the attention away, also because of the "dymanic lines" at the background that make the whole thing look too hard when the character(in my opinion) looks gentle. The curvy lights that twirled on her leg(a bit of stability or whatever you name it)contrasts with the dynamic background(speed) pretty much.
Although Sharon's pose itself was considered as dynamic(about to fly), but overally(her torso was sorta being pulled back, kinda make her looks like she is only striking a pose instead of ready to fly; the hard sparkles around her body kinda "slow" her down as well because if she is ready to take off, the sparkles should be somehow behind her), it is not that dynamic enough to match with the background. I personally think a softer blend of the background should do better; keep it simple, but milder as well, so it would reduce the "speed" of the background.
But overally, Deamond has done a great job in this picture.

Next time, give your critique if you think it was better before
I still think it looks better now because the focus is meant to be on her since it's a contest for character designing, not background designing (though a background helps, it's not needed. The character needs to be the primary focus)
And the light surrounding her just makes her look like she's charging up to take off. I think it looks great, and the background doesn't take away from her anymore.

*shrugs* I don't consider my comment as a critique, if not I would have posted it as critique as well; it was just my very personal opinion regarding to my judgements and taste that I would like to share. At the end of the day, it depends on the artist to decide which one she prefers. I honour every choice Deamond decides to make in her artwork and I believe in her judgement.
However, my stand will remain the same. Yes, the picture is focus on the character, but there is no point if the background brings it down (not refering to this artwork, just an example) I'm not sure if you are actually getting my point, but I was saying the current background still averts my attention away from the character due to its hard colours. It could be just my problem, but that is the only minor problem that my eyes can never lie to me. Like what I have said, it is my very personal opinion of what I think would make the artwork better, but the artwork itself is perfect not matter which background she choose anyway.

One thing I want to make it clear is that I'm not trying to compete whose critique is more useful; it is merely an opinion sharing. There is no method in measuring whose critique is useful because every critique has its right points as well as the wrong ones. Yours can be wrong, so as mine.
