The earth orbits the sun, and the moon orbits the earth. The moon goes all the way around the earth in 28 days, and the lunar cycles indicate how much of the sun you would see from the moon, as the moon reflects the suns light for us to be able to see it (hence the moon going from being a full moon to being invisible to us). Also, an eclipse is when the moon is exactly between the sun and the earth, blocking out the sun from our view, so the earth can't be in the way all the time. If necessary, Luna will have to be enjoying the sun during an eclipse.

Ah, well in that case, I am going for a Tychonian model then, yes. I am also not sure which model Equestria works by yet, and this idea would not leave my head until I drew it.
