"Take a seat kid." Barney said as he handed her a Coke. "Now let's go over some ground rules before we head out. First off, don't smile or talk to ANYBODY, at least not in public. Command doesn't look kindly on fraternizing with the populace. Second, since it's your first day, try to put on a good show for the other officers, stop random people, maybe use your stunstick a few times to scare them and so forth. But don't try TOO hard. Basically they want to see if you're capable of performing your duties without going soft."

"B-but sir. I'm fully trained, and I passed my entrance examinations and reeducation without a hitch. Why wouldn't I be qualified?" She said in a nervous tone.

"Where did you transfer from?" Barney asked.

"35." She replied.

"I hear Paris is nice this time of year, let me tell you something, this is CITY 17. The beating heart of the empire. The police here don't screw around like in the other cities. If they even catch a hint that you're a "good cop" or worse, a "sympathizer" they'll ship you to Nova Prospekt before you can say Dr. Breen's Private Reserve."

"So which one are you?" She asked, only this time with a coy smile.

"You're better off not asking that question." Barney said.

They both got up, The new girl outstretched her hand.

"I'm Cécile, and you?"

Barney gave her a serious look, "And I'm your commanding officer for the duration of your training. Understood?" her hand shot back she saluted nervously. "Y-Yessir."

"Barney waited a moment, and then smiled. "Or you can call me Barney, either one is fine" He said shrugging. Cécile stifled a giggle. "Alright, now go get your sidearm and baton and we'll hit the streets." He said. Cécile saluted again and walked towards the lockers.

"Great. First Gordon shows up out of nowhere yesterday and now I've got a rookie to train up. I gotta keep her away from Kleiner's lab, at least for now." he thought. Trust was a hard thing to come by in this day and age. If she found out the truth his cover would be blown, and he'd probably have to hand her over to Odessa. God knows what the rebellion would do with her. He'd test her for the next week, see where her allegiances lie, she doesn't come off as the typical recruit, looking to bust their fellow man for perks. But looks could be deceiving. If it turns out that her opinion on the Combine can be swayed, he'd take her to see Izzy or Dr. Vance for a little sit-down.

Cécile came jogging back, her USP slapping her side. "I couldn't find any stunsticks." She said.

"That's alright, when we get back I'll snag one from the armory for you." he said. Barney slapped the open button on the blast hatch, the aging metal door creaking as it slid to the side. He looked back at her, he could tell she was nervous.

"alright kid, lets get this show on the road."
