When I started watching the anime, I knew only 3 things about it.
1) If you write someones name in the Death Note, they die.
2) There's a character named L, a character named Light, and a character named Kira.
3) A scene where a character eats potato chips very over-dramatically. (As re-enacted by my brother, the day after he watched it.)
