Description The next in a long line of my special brand of reference sheets!

Here is Roscoe; a jaded, wisened and cantankerous old fox. Born well before the 'Valley was plunged into chaos, he is one of the few who remembers exactly what happened in those fateful days. His taciturn nature makes it difficult to extract the truth from him though, and he has a lot of memories which he would rather forget. In his time he was the sharpest trickster in the West, but he was blinded by a series of unfortunate consequences which also led to the loss of his mate and sons. For years afterwards he struggled in the Badlands with his disability, relying on the good will of others to survive. Luckily (or otherwise) Victor eventually made his way westward and met old Roscoe while looking for a place to stay. Now the two tricksters -one young and one old- live together, supporting one another in a strange friendship.

Roscoe is 57 at the time of the story. He still struggles without eyes, as such he doesn't often wander far from their home. Instead he makes it his business to keep it in one piece while Victor is away (though being old and lame, his laziness and the warm afternoon sun often get the better of him). Roscoe's temprament has been dulled by experience and he is much kinder than in his younger years. He feels strongly for Victor, though he would never say it aloud, and has a peculiar kind of paternal nature towards him since the loss of his own sons. He has been around long enough to pass down his words of wisdom and advice, even if in Victor's case it often falls upon deaf ears.

'What can I say, Miss? They don’t call it the Wild West for nothin’!' - Roscoe, Pg. 267

No I don't think I have, kindly enlighten me.

Sure!

Well... There was an old bull and a young bull standing atop a hill, looking over a vast pasture of cows.  After a little while, the young bull said to the older bull: "Psst.  Yo, pops.  Whadda ya say we run down there and [bang] one of those cows?"  The old bull looked over at the young bull with sagacity and calmly replied:  "No.  Let us WALK down and [bang] ALL of them."

I was often told this tale when I was trying to do something too fast and at risk of making sloppy work of it.

You see, our elders know everything about being young but we know nothing about being old.  To make it as far in life as they have, they must've developed some pretty simple and effective ways of doing things.  When they're willing to share their wisdom, listen.  In this case the young bull was about to dash off and do a sloppy jib.  The old bull knew that in this case it was time to slow down, take his time and do a thorough job.

lol what a heart-warming tale. It is important to listen to our elders, even if they seem to ramble on a bit. In some ways I can't wait to get old, so I can look down condescendingly on everyone and everything, lol. In Roscoe's case, he's always trying to stop Victor from getting himself killed, usually because he's rushing headlong into things.

Indeed.  I can't say I want to get old but I do want to be wise.   I want to die whilst living, you see.  They say the good die young, so I don't know.  I'd hate to die a drawn out death in a bed, or even worse, suffer from dementia.  Roscoe sounds like a good caring person.

If the good die young then I'm set! I've got a good 70 years left, lol. He is one of the kinder characters in my story.

I don't intend to die 'til I'm done living though.
It's nice to have a beacon of kindness in a dark world.

Thanks.  At the same time though, a good death in the middle of a good deed could be the highest form of living.

Call me selfish too.  I've always had an irrational fear of being forgotten by the world.
One of my heroes is Winston Churchill.  He liked history a lot too, as he intended to write it!

Winston Churchill was a pretty cool guy, even if he was a hopeless drunk.

He was the man!  He wasn't hopeless when drunk either.  I don't remember who he was talking to, but once some high ranking woman pointed it out to him how drunk he was.  He calmly replied "Madame, you're ugly.  In the morning, I shall be sober."  He was a master of quips and tenacity.

Man, in a time of war (which is all the freakin' time), you need toughness.  I respect the way she handled the Belgrano.  That was love right there.

Just realized that you used another pose.
Well, however.
Culpeo said some true words under your last version, and I think it's worth to remember. No offence. ^^

So here comes a little suggestion for the future:

IF you trace someone's poses and stuff - please, at least give some credit where you got it from, link it to the original. Simple thing, it costs you just a copy-paste-action and avoids trouble.

Second: The best way to improve in skills for poses: Use real life photo references. Those are practically poses at first hand.

I appreciate the sentiment, I have indeed decided to use only original stuff from now on. Being lazy is more trouble than it is worth. My apologies for all the confusion, it was my fault.

Why did you reupload it? To get rid of certain comments? I'm sorry, but I think it's not right.

Lily-Box In reply to Skia [2011-03-15 10:35:36 +0000 UTC]

I realise this is really late and you probably wont read this anyway, but as far as I can see he reuploaded it because he didn't use the reference from Culpeo and used a different pose.

Once again, another fantastic ref sheet and interesting character! To have such a tragic past and having to struggle due to his blindness is very sad. Hopefully Victor will treat him well.

Victor? Treat anybody besides himself well? Come now, that's a little optomistic I think, lol. They love each other really I think, Victor never had a father and Roscoe lost his only son, so you can see how their relationship might develop.

Creative concept. A blind old "man" giving hints to the main character seems like a good idea.
By the way...why do I think that he's going to be the "mouth of the writer" ?

Deceitful-Fox In reply to Erexis [2011-02-22 16:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Those hints are often ignored mind you, lol. You're sort of right, he does fill that role on accasion as I'm sure you'll see.

It's somewhat acceptable if you have a young and stubborn character to deal with. Or at least I guess so.

Deceitful-Fox In reply to Erexis [2011-02-22 16:55:21 +0000 UTC]

Honestly I don't look at my characters as plot progression devices. I just throw them in and they do their own thing, it's a natural process.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Erexis In reply to Deceitful-Fox [2011-02-22 17:13:44 +0000 UTC]

Me neither. I was only trying to look through the eyes of Roscoe. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
I also make my stories almost the same way. I start it with a few individual characters and think up a "world" to put them in. My main problem with the stories is that I don't have as many characters as I would like to have for the whole story.

Deceitful-Fox In reply to Erexis [2011-02-22 17:19:00 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I don't know if I could describe every facet of how this story came about. It really did grow bit by bit, year by year as I was hit with inspiration. For a long time it was a tale without a setting, but then I played Red Dead Redemption and I was like 'That's it, this is where my story happens'. Having too many characters can be a pitfall (one which I have fallen into with my story, lol). Keep that in mind.

Thank you very much! I may actually write a short little extract thing after I've finished the main story which documents this guy's life beforehand.

Cajek In reply to Deceitful-Fox [2011-02-22 16:28:21 +0000 UTC]

...It's heartwarming because he overcame the tragedy (I'm guessing) of losing his wife, son, and sight by opening himself up to others and by hopefully teaching that rogue Victor some empathy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Deceitful-Fox In reply to Cajek [2011-02-22 17:21:34 +0000 UTC]

My story is a Western, nearly everyone's a villain in one way or another. However since you asked; yes there is one main antagonist, but they are very much a background character for 90% of the story.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cajek In reply to Deceitful-Fox [2011-02-22 17:30:38 +0000 UTC]

I think "villain" is a matter of motivation and goal. Is the main baddie motivated by insanity and has goals associated with money or something? That's just my first guess.
