Description A Martian from the 1898 novel "The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. Gigantic vampiric creatures that were essentially Wells' idea of beings of pure cold intellect: brains, eyes, heart and lungs. Gaining all the nutrition they needed by draining the blood of their victims into their own bloodstream.

Y'know, looking at the Martians now, being somewhere between four feet long and "large as a bear", I could almost see them piloting the same sort of mechs as the Spider Mastermind and the Arachnotron from DOOM. Of course, those aren't as protective or intimidating as the tripods...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. The Martian handling-machine had five legs and pretty much as many appendages as it needed to accomplish given tasks of construction. They also had their flying-machine, and a digging-machine that was actually automated.
