Description Another Major Motoko Kusanagi fanart based on GITS SAC 2nd Gig.

Currently I’m in a state of very worried of the GITS franchise. Why? Because I read that Hollywood was interested in making GITS version into a live action movie. Although it planned to be produced by Steven Spielberg with Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) as a screenplay writer, it wasn’t enough to calm me. Western movies based on Japanese animation/games that released recently were terrible, but they keep coming back with a plan to create Akira, Battle Angel Alita and GITS. Dragon Ball was hell, and I heard that Tekken and King of Fighter were disaster. People are talking about Akira’s leaked screenplay and they hate it. I will cry in my bed if Hollywood is going to crush another, especially Ghost in the Shell…

Ghost in the Shell is an amazing series. And I agree with you when you say that Western movies based on Japanese anime/games/manga, really do suck balls. Most of the movies suck. However, I recall only seeing one or two that were actually fairly good.

Honestly, the closest I would accept a live action anything would be in the style of "Final Flight of the Osiris" which I think was partly motion capture with all CGI. Motion capture performance rather than trying to find actors is a better way to go than trying to attach big names in associated genres to the characters they will portray. Its especially frustrating to have the creative teams that who know little to nothing of the source material or even consult it or even for the cast to attempt method acting.

Anyway, if they can put the head of a younger Jeff Bridges on a body double and get past the Uncanny Valley effect, they could try at least to produce something of that calibre with adapting anime to live action. Even I admit, sometimes the production and actors in live action adaptations to anime in Japan rarely look good at all.

Agreed, if Hollywood is so eager to make the adaptation, they can always try to do what John Woo did in Appleseed Ex Machina. It still have the design from the original Appleseed movie, but has the John Woo signatures all over it. It may didn't fare well, but at least fans didn't yell at it...

say what you will about the horrors of american adaptations of anime, what i want is a hollywood-style summer blockbuster Dirty Pair , which is not on the table for some reason.

I think they targeted the most famous anime first, like Dragon Ball and Akira. They probably will do Naruto or One Piece first before coming down to Dirty Pair, Gun Smith Cats or others.

gah, but GSC would make more sense! it'd essentially be a buddy cop movie, and we do them just fine! start small, don't immediately go for the big'n's!
that's the problem- going for the complicated things that can't be crammed into a 2 hour film.....

I'm going out on a limb and saying that an Akira movie would only work if it were a trilogy. My biggest fear about the GitS movie is that they would edit it down significantly. much less nudity that is.

Well, I didn't say that Spielberg movie wasn't good. Just that I didn't find ANY anime adaptation that was good enough. And since Spielberg haven't into that department so far, we didn't know how it 'll be turned out...
