I went to the Duluth zoo last weekend and it was a very depressing adventure. Only 1/4 of the animals remained since my previous visit of 6 yrs ago. The zoo has funding problems since it lost its federal funding. There is talk of it closing down. Numerous displays were empty and only a few of those had signs posted that the animals were under medical treatment.

The confines reminded me of a federal prison as many cgaes were too small. Several of the animals constantly voiced objections of hunger. This particular lion had recently lost considerable weight as told by the lose folds of skin which hung down.

As Ahna, (my 4 yr old granddaughter) and I stood before the glass viewing this lion, he charged us and repeatedly attacked the glass wishing to consume us. I had to clone a large bare spot on his nose in this photo which told me this lion hits the glass in hunger frequently. This fact sadden me enormously as did his cries of frustration. It was a humbling experience to have him charge and consider this was what it would be like in the wild as his prey. I'll post a few shots in scraps of his attempts to attack but they did not turn out due to all the scratches on the glass and it was very cold 40 degrees so I was shivering the whole time there.
