Day 6 of the 25 Days of Christmas Challenge
Prompt: Candy Cane

“Kuroo, dear, you’ve been dating for, what, two years? And we never heard about how you met, have we?” Your mother asked on what seemed like a peaceful dinner at yours, but when Kuroo perked up and his eyes lighted up, you knew that it was that was likely going to change.

“Well, it’s kind of a funny story…” Kuroo starts off, more than willing to share. It was kind of scary, how close he managed to get to your parents.

“I’m surprised [Name] didn’t tell you, actually. You have to forgive me, though.” He glanced at you with amusement dancing within his gold orbs, and you rolled your eyes before taking over the role as the story-teller.

“Remember when I couldn’t find a right club to join and decided to be the manager for the volleyball team? I had seen them during some of their competitions before, and since they had a practice match the day I went to watch their practice, I was expecting to be blown away by their prefor—“

“Is this related to how you met?” Your father raised an eyebrow, and Kuroo laughed.

“I don’t think so, but since someone just loves talking…” Your boyfriend trailed off after the glare you shot him.

“Okay fine, where was I? Right. I was excited but kind of scared - you know how I was in first year - so I sort of sneaked into the gym, hoping no one would notice me.”

Kuroo continued your story. “And I think most of us actually didn’t notice until Kai - he’s one of team players - brought it up to our attention that there was a suspicious figure walking into our practice. I was holding and eating this candy cane, because it was holiday season and practice hadn’t started.”

“Also because of your sweet tooth.” You chirped in.

“Also because of my sweet tooth.” He adds, and you grin. “So that was when Yaku - he’s [Name]’s best friend - slapped me on the back saying that there was a cute girl behind me. And I startled and turned around to see [Name] behind me - I still question if she really isn’t a ninja - before realising that my candy cane wasn’t in my hands anymore. And I remember searching for where it was, only to realise when she squawked like a bird as it landed on her head.”

“Hey, I didn’t squawk like a bird, Tetsu!” Your voice rose above your family’s chuckles.

“And that,” Kuroo said in-between his laughter, “had been the most accurate toss I have ever done.”

“With a candy cane!” You threw your hands up in frustration. “It took so long to clean off!”

“Hey, but.” Kuroo started. “I got you something.”

“What?” You eyed him apprehensively.

Pulling out something from behind his back, he tapped a candy cane on the tip of your nose. “Happy birthday, [Name].

“Uh… Bokuto kind of spoilt my present, and I didn’t have time to make a new one.” His cheeks reddened as he confessed that in front of your parents.

You only laughed, accepting the sweet when it was pressed into your hand. “Thank you.”

Besides, it was a candy cane that started a relationship you’d treasure forever.
