Day 25 of the 25 Days of Christmas Challenge!
Prompt: Unwrapped

"Why did I even need to cover my eyes when it's already so dark I can't see?"

You let out a shriek of a frequency you didn't know you were ever capable of reaching. "I told you not to open your eyes, Vitya!"

"Seriously." He ignores your exclamation and fumbles over to the light switch, flicking them on quicker than you were able to react. "Do you not know where the light switches are in your own hou— oh."

He blinked, not believing that there was now a huge Christmas tree in your house that hadn't been there in the morning.

You must have put quite some time and thought into decorating it, he figured when he saw the candy canes and ice-skate ornaments hung rather precariously on the tree. Still, he couldn’t help but smile at the fact. You didn't celebrate Christmas often, but somehow you always loved the thought, so he guessed it wasn't unlike you to set up Christmas decorations like this one.

“Wow!” He turned to you. “You’ve really outdone yourse—“

What he hadn’t realised was the little sound coming from… your legs?

No— not like that. Rather, behind them.

A fluffy brown thing was waving side to side. Really fluffy. Viktor blinked, tilting his head to the left. It wasn’t until a tongue stuck out of the brown cotton candy pile and licked your stretched out hand that he finally realised that sound had been a bark, or… a whimper of sorts.

“We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy birthday!” You grinned, scooping the dog up in your arms. His turquoise eyes went wide like a child who’d just found candy. Ah, the things you’d give to see him smile like that every day.

"Is that my present?" His gaze rose to meet yours.

"Yeah. Take it as... Both a Christmas present and a birthday present."

He tucked a strand of [h/c] hair behind your ear, planting a quick kiss on your cheek before spinning around. “I’ll get the camera!” he dashed down the corridor.

"So what's its name?" Viktor raised his phone to take a selfie of the two of you and the puppy.

"It doesn't have one, so you can name it."

He set the phone on the sofa. ”Really?" Viktor's eyes seemed to sparkle with excitement. "What do you think?"

"I was thinking, Makkachin, or something..." You laughed. "Is it weird?"

"No." He placed a hand on his chin, thinking. "I think it's perfect."

"Really? Then that settles it." You petted the dog - Makkachin - on the head, before transferring it onto his lap. The brown ball seemed to like it better on his lap than yours, tail wagging more excitedly as it looked up at it's owner. The puppy was small now, but it'd probably grow to be much bigger. You sighed. "I wanted to wrap it. Like, put it in a box or something to surprise you. But you turned on the lights."

He laughed. "In that case, I think it's better unwrapped. It wouldn't have gone well."

You made a face. "I know. Take care of him."

Viktor's eyes sparkled as he looked down at Makkachin. "Trust me, I will." He paused. "Thank you.”

You grinned at him as he smoothed down the fur of Makkachin. “Of course. Just don’t let him replace me as your best companion.

“Happy birthday, Vitya.”
