Day 4 of the 25 Days of Christmas Challenge
Prompt: Gingerbread House
"[Name], [Name]!" Nishinoya ran up to you, grinning from ear to ear.
"What?" You eyed your friend, excited for whatever he'd pull out.
"I found this! Let's make one together." Nishinoya held up a box, with a picture of a small brown house on the front.
"Ginger... bread... house?" You slowly, and with no small amount of difficulty, read out the words on the box. At six years old, a lot of things were unfamiliar to both of you.
"Yeah! It's like a cookie house! Let's build one!" He plopped down on the floor and started pouring the contents out.
Giggling, you quickly followed.
You couldn't remember how long after, but when your parents popped their heads in to check on you, the gingerbread house was finished. Messy, some parts slanting sideways, but still finished. No one would have guessed that the icing decorations on the cookies were meant to look like the ones on the box, but the both of you were happy nonetheless.
"Yuu, auntie offered to let you sleep here. Do you want to stay overnight with [Name]?"
Nishinoya glanced over at you, eyes that were the colour of coffee lit up, before nodding his head vigorously. His mother laughed before patting his head, ruffling his brown hair.
That night, Nishinoya and you shared a futon, and your mother read a story to you just before you went to sleep.
"βAnd that was their happily ever after."
"That's it? But there wasn't any dragons or fights with swords!" Nishinoya protested. "And I don't understand how the witch's curse could be broken by a kiss of true love." He made a somewhat disgusted sound.
Your mother only laughed. "Love is pretty powerful. It might be hard to find, and it might take ages to build up, but it'll be worth it at the end."
"Like our gingerbread house?" You spoke up, having listened attentively the entire time your mother was talking.
"Just like your gingerbread house."
~~~
"Hey, Yuu. Do you remember the time when we build a gingerbread house together? That was around ten years ago? Eleven?"
Nishinoya nodded, a lock of blond hair falling over his forehead. "It took ages to build. But it was really fun at that time." He waved his hands about excitedly, as if nothing had changed. You found it weird to see his hair down, and to see him lying on a bed, not jumping around like usual.
"It's surprising how you can remember things that happened so long ago. I can barely remember myself."
"Well, it's not like I forgot things that happened when we were young. My amnesia's only up to the past year."
Seeing his brown eyes stare into yours with such fever and energy, everything really seemed the same - well except for the bandage on his head. But one year was a long period of time. So many things had been forgotten...
"Seriously, why did you jump out in front of a car?"
"I don't know. I can't remember, [Name]. Maybe it was to chase down Kiyoko-san, or something."
You choked out a laugh. So he didn't forget his obsession with the pretty third-year senpai?
"Look out for yourself more next time, okay?" Without thinking much about it, you reached over and brushed back the lock of blond hair before cupping his cheek, your thumb smoothing over his cheekbone.
It was only after he locked up that you froze as well, quickly retracting your arm.
"Sorry." You barked out the apology, stepping back and almost tripping over your chair in the process. You'd forgotten that your relationship wasn't at the point where it was. Right now, you were just good friends that had been together since you were young. And you had to remember that.
"[Name]?" Nishinoya reached up to touch his cheek, reddening. "What's gotten into you?"
"Nothing. I was just zoning out." You forced yourself to smile to make it more believable.
Was it wrong not to tell him about the relationship that he had forgotten? You didn't want him to think that he had to be with you again out of obligation. Was it wrong to want him to fall in love with you again without feeling forced to?
"You're lucky that it was only one year. You didn't forget much, really. Just all the bad grades you'd gotten."
He could have forgotten about you all together. Could have. But he didn't.
If love was really like a gingerbread house, you'd be able to build it again, after all.
