Prompt: Giving

What’s about giving?

“[Name]…”

Hide’s watching as you mull over which books to lend to his best friend. You gestured for him to continue while reaching for another book on your shelf. He reaches it before you do, taking the book off and flipping it around to look at the title; it’s the book you had been telling Kaneki about just the other day.

“How do you know when you’re in love?”

“Huh?” You twisted around to look at him, eyebrows drawn together.

“How do you know if you’re in love with someone?” He repeated the question.

“Yeah… but why do you ask me?”

“Well, because you told me that you love Kaneki!” He grinned as your cheeks flushed bright red.

“I was talking to myself! You just overheard!” You sighed, making your way out of the house. The two of you had to meet Kaneki at the coffee shop, and you spent longer than expected to pick out your books, so you were going to be late if you didn’t start moving.

“I guess…” You started before Hide could probe you for an answer again. “It’s when you want to give more than you take.”

He nodded, pretending to flip through the book in his hands while you walked in front of him, covering the short distance to the coffee shop. He catches a glimpse of the bright smile that spreads across your lips when you see Kaneki, and his own falters when he realises that it's not for him.

He already knew, long ago. From the way you never allowed him to go near your kitchen and fridge when he came to visit. From the way you had narrowed your eyes at Kaneki after his accident, saying that he smelled different. There were so many signs. They were little, for you were careful, but enough for Hide to piece your secret together.

You were a ghoul.

But he already knew, long ago. It didn't stop him from falling in love with you. Maybe he was just plain crazy, when he felt happy that you had gone to him when you needed help.

He waited for you to wake up, after he had found you collapsed outside his door, staining the snow red with the blood that was gushing out from the wound in your stomach. The wound you had gotten from the CCG investigators who caught you while you were out chasing Kaneki down after he disappeared. A mere human would have been dead long ago.

He waited until you woke with a start, finding a cup of warm coffee waiting for you.

"Did you find him?" Warm brown eyes, steeled with the determination to hear what you had to say, despite the traces of fear lingering in them.

Your eyes widened before everything rushed back to you - finding Kaneki with the Aogiri Tree, leaving in a rush, almost getting killed by CCG investigators, barely making it to Hide’s house before you passed out.

You let out a small laugh, accepting the cup of coffee with shaky hands. "Hide, you're giving me a chance to explain? You haven't called the CCG, have you?"

"No. I trust you. Besides, it's about giving."

You shook your head slightly, not understanding what he meant. “What’s about giving?”

He chuckles, fear settling down once he realises that you don’t seem to want to attack him. Instead, you’re oddly calm, maybe because you’ve decided to trust him.

“We have more important things…” He reminds you, effectively avoiding the question.

“Right.” You start, deciding to pour everything out to the friend you’ve decided to entrust your fate to.
