Day 8 of the 25 Days of Christmas Challenge
Prompt: Hot Chocolate
Coffee Shop!AU where Oikawa's a barista ^^
You huffed and rubbed your hands against each other as you stood by the entrance of the coffee shop, waiting for your friend to order her coffee.
From what you heard, [Friend’s name] frequented the coffee shop because of the admittedly cute barista that worked there and the great coffee, but you just weren’t feeling it today, and hoped that she’d be done soon so that you could get to some warmer place and warm your hands. Needless to say, forgetting to bring gloves was not a good idea.
“Ah, [Friend’s name]-chan! Would you like the usual?”
“Yes, thank you, Oikawa-san. Oh, by the way…”
You narrowed your eyes at your friend as she continued to make small talk with him, the brown-haired barista flashing her a bright smile that made even your heart stumble—. What? It definitely did not. You tuned out their conversation, stuffing your hands into your pockets and trying not to stare at how he pushed back the dark glasses that perched on the bridge of his nose and puffed annoyedly, and rather adorably, when the marker refused to work.
Somehow, you failed to notice the subtle glances Oikawa threw towards you.
When [Friend’s name] finally made her way back towards you with her coffee, you clucked your tongue and turned to leave.
“I take back what I said about doubting your tastes.” You mumble under your breath so that only she could hear. “But is he taken?”
“He is cute, right? Too bad I have a boyfriend already… He’s single, I think, so you should by all means go for him!” She grinned when you gave her a warning look.
You were about to say something about how you weren’t that interested when a smooth voice from behind interrupted your conversation.
“Um, excuse me!”
You startled and turned around, eyes meeting those of a chocolate brown, shielded by clear lenses. The person you’d been talking about stood in front of you, lips in the form of a toothy grin.
“Sorry for taking so long. I didn’t know if you liked coffee, but pretty much everyone likes hot chocolate, so.” He held up a cup of what you’d assume to be hot chocolate.
You hesitated, cheeks heating up. Oikawa’s grin only grew, and he reached out to gently grasp your cold hands in his warm ones, pressing the cup to them. Your fingers curled around the cup, grateful for something hot.
“Thank you…” You looked up at him, the corner of your lips tipping up in a small smile.
“If your hands are cold again, come back to buy something next time!” He stepped back and wriggled his fingers in a farewell gesture that seemed slightly awkward - the reason for the tips of his ears turning pink.
Without thinking much about it, you returned the awkward gesture, and those chocolate eyes brightened before he headed back to the coffee shop.
It was only then that you looked at the cup, seeing words that were hastily scribbled down in a boyish handwriting.
I forgot my pickup line when I saw how beautiful you were.
You kept the cup even after you finished the hot chocolate. Not that you’d ever tell that to the brown-haired barista you ended up dating.
