Day 10 of the 25 Days of Christmas Challenge
Prompt: Ice Skating

“Just position your feet in a V shape.”

[Name] only stretched her arms out, wanting Yuri to support her for fear that she’d fall again. Every single movement she made only served to make her lose her balance and fall on her face - or if she was lucky, her ass. The boy who asked her to try ice skating narrowed blue-green eyes, but still reluctantly offered his arms for support.

She carefully moved her feet into position before looking up at him. “Now what?”

“Um. Skate forward?” The way he said it seemed more like a question than anything else, as if he expected her to already know how to move as fluidly - or even at all - on ice as he did.

[Name] only gave the blond a flat look, letting him know that the instruction - if it was meant to be one - did not help. Yuri was taking time off his training to spend time with her, and she was grateful for that, really. It wasn’t that she wasn’t trying, she just couldn’t balance on two thin blades.

“Then hold on, try skating with me, okay?” He sighed, gripping her arms tighter before skating backwards, guiding her along.

Following in his steps, she miraculously managed to move forward without falling. After covering a short distance, she felt as if she might be able to actually do it without his help for once. But that was said too early, she guessed.

[Name] let out a small squeak as one of her feet slipped out from under her and she fell sideways, twisting just in time to land on her bottom instead of her hip. Yuri, still holding on to her, went down beside her.

“I thought you were doing well for once! He immediately jumped up to his feet, adjusting his cat print shirt. “Just how bad are you at this?”

“Are you even trying?” He continued, brushing off his bottom. “It’s not that hard. It’s even easier to move on ice than on land. I could skate when I was young, so why can’t you now? Honestly, it’s embarrassing to fall with you over and over.”

“Maybe it’s just because I’m just not a skating prodigy like you, Yurio.”

Yuri merely continues glaring at the ice, completely dismissive of the way [Name]’s voice grew quieter as she spoke, the way it slightly cracked from the effort of keeping it flat when she felt hurt and embarrassed.

He only clicked his tongue, stretching out a hand to help her up. A moment passed, and Yuri finally glanced at [Name] to see why she wasn’t taking his hand, only to realise that hurt was swimming in those [e/c] orbs. If it had been anyone else, Yuri would have scoffed and told them to suck it up, but for some reason, he couldn’t do it to [Name].

Instead, he bent down and grabbed her arms, helping her up to her feet with a bit of cooperation on her part.

“Seriously, I can’t with you. I didn’t mean it, okay?” Hearing the silent apology in his words, her face immediately brightened up.

“I’ll practice, and maybe someday, I’ll skate Agape even better than you!”

“I’d like to see you try.” Yuri bit into his piroshki, watching as [Name] bit into hers.

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes, picking up the arrogant tone in his voice. “Russian punk.”

Yuri thought about how he felt his own happiness stem from hers when she could finally skate on her own, how unconditional love was something he scoffed at, yet still something he experienced. The way he felt for [Name], his good friend, was different than the way he felt for his grandfather, but in a way, it was the same. Agape. Maybe he’d try skating with [Name] in mind some time.

“I’m not kidding, I’d really like to see you skate it.” His cheeks turned slightly pink, but [Name] didn’t notice.

“Hmm.” She mused. “Would you teach me how to skate it?”

“Maybe, if I win the Grand Prix Finals.”

“I’ll be waiting for you to come back home with a gold medal, then.” Yuri’s breath hitched as [Name] turned to look at him with a bright smile. Albeit reluctantly, he felt the corner of his lips tilt up too.
