Description I put this in the Movies/TV section for a reason, not Games.

As a kid, I used to watch the old Super Mario Bros cartoons, and of course the Friday Legend of Zelda episodes. (I've been watching them on YouTube again, not the best of cartoons, but I can't get it off my mind right now. Argh.) Hence why this is in the Movies/TV Fanart category, not the Games one.

Anyways, I've lately wanted to update the Zelda of that cartoon with some of the features seen on more current Princess Zelda pictures. (I'd love to see a remake that didn't run out of story ideas after the introduction--and perhaps really made good meat out of the romantic tension between Link and Zelda in that story.) Mostly the hairstyle, the jacket, and so on. And to of course, get rid of the horrid 80's style pink pants. She just looked so 80s, and yet so cool at the same time. And she was a badass--actually able to fight, and in some cases, escape Ganondorf on her own.

Anyways, that's my explanation and long story. *phew*

Drawn in Photoshop CS2 with Intuos 6x8 tablet.

Thank you. Yes, she needed to be a badass, and stay that way.

I loved that show as a child as well, and I always loved the way they protrayed Princess Zelda as something more than a demure, helpless girl. The newer games in the series are taking the same route, but nothing compares to TV-Zelda.

Her outfit rocked in all of it's 80's-ness, and you managed to make it look even better. I especially love the hairstyle, and the change to the lower half of her look. ^_^

Thank you. Yeah, I wanted to update her, but still keep the original spirit of the costume.

I don't see this in ArtSpam so I shall comment here!

It appears that the torso is twisted to her left, not sure if that was intentional but it works well. Where she's looking and the light source for the rays don't line up, although I'm tired right now and nothing lines up. I like the upside-down Triforce (chalice/blade symbolism?) at the bottom of the sash, maybe might go well on the belt buckle as well?

Only thing it's really missing for me is the broadsword from Twilight Princess (not the Master Sword but the plainer one without adornment) in her right hand.

Hmmm, I kinda thought I was missing a sword for her, so good call.

She's looking somewhere else than the lightsource. You don't look directly at the sun, now do you?

The twist was unintentional but looked good so I left it as is. *shrugs*

Thanks for commenting.

Oh my goodness! I never knew you were into Zelda! Yes I did remembered those cartoons now! Did you get the DVDs?

Nah. I don't have a whole lot of money to spend, so I tend to put it on things I most want, like the Matrix Revolutions/Reloaded soundtrack set. Besides, with the cartoons on YouTube, why bother buying?

I meant, "You CAN'T just glance at her and say "80's!!!" anymore." Stupid fingers not listening to my brain...

I love this! I own the Zelda cartoon DVD set so, yeah, I'm a big fan too. I like how you toned everything down and made her look quite a bit more timeless. You just glance at her and say "80's!!!." The only thing is the upside down Triforce. Now, it may just be me, but upside down religious symbols (which it is to Hyrule) are typically not good. Regardless, I'm faving this one.

Hmm, I was going with the position the Triforce of Wisdom was usually in during the cartoon--bottom tip pointing down. In the intro, Ganon seems to have his Triforce with point-up.

There's a bit of ancient mythology relating to the up/down of triangles--point down was feminine, point up was masculine. (I'll leave you to use imagery to figure out why it was decided that way). Seeing as Zelda was feminine, and the Triforce of Wisdom seems more feminine in that its presence and influence is quieter, less brassy. Triforce of Power, what with Ganon holding it, was distinctly more masculine. That's why I made the triangles that way.

And thank you for the fave/comments! It's good to see I'm not in a total vacuum regarding that cartoon.

And yeah, the original cartoon Zelda was soooo 80s. The big hair, the middle part, the pink pants. Yeow.

Ah, I see. I remember the indivdual pieces being point down. I guess I had just never seen the entire Triforce that way.

Now that I think about it, though, I do remember it kinda being that way. In the Captain N cartoons, the pieces were pointed down, but the Triforce itseldf still had one piece on top and two on bottom, same thing in the comics..

Anyway, It's not like those comics/cartoons were known for their consistency so it could be any way. And it doesn't detract from the image, so it's all good.

This is FREAKING AWESOME! I may be a bit biased since I am a huge Zelda cartoon fan I, too, would love to see a cartoon that made better use of the Linik/Zelda tension. And I agree that she was a badass, which is why I love her.

I wish Nintendo would make a game in which Zelda was a playable character (CD-i doesn not count as it was made by Phillips and sucked more than words).

Yeah, I think an updated cartoon would work wonders. Chances are they'd probably try to make it anime or CGI.

As long as they stay out of falling into anime tropes the unclassy way, they should do nicely with it. I'd imagine writers now have better ideas, what with more games to pull tidbits from. And writing for the teenaged/young adult set versus kids would make a world of difference.

And yes, Zelda needs to stay a badass.

Wow, this is really nice, you can tell it's supposed to be the cartoon Zelda but it doesn't make your eyes bleed. XD I thought her outfit was terrible even back in the 80s.
Did she escape Ganon on her own? I remember her running off even when common sense dictated she should stay behind. Then again, Ganon had a habit of imprisoning those he captured with all their weapons...not the brightest crayon in the box.

DeepChrome In reply to Seldavia [2008-09-13 21:21:15 +0000 UTC]

I've been watching the YouTubes, and one time she gets captured and tied to a stalactite. As soon as Ganon walked away, she put a boomerang to work and cut the rope tying her hands behind her, and got away. She still needed Link's help to finish escaping, but at least she doesn't need him to go all the way every time. But other times she did as much stupid stuff as Link or Ganon. Nobody was particularly the brightest crayon in that cartoon, to be bluntly honest.

I thought most of her outfit was okay, but the colors were pretty bad. Pastel pink, bright aqua jacket, dark purple shirt. Bleh. I toned the purples around to something closer to the game Zelda's outfits, and turned the pants to pale blue-white. (Becuase pastel pink makes my eyes and brain bleed.)

Yeah, that was the one I was thinking of when I mentioned Ganon leaving them with their weapons. XD

Yeah, what the hell made him do that, especially when he had her in his cluches. He'd want to keep her there. Unless he has a weird pursuit fetish or something...you never know with strange pig-men scorcerers.

I love how you added the elegance of Zelda's game form with the design of her cartoon counterpart. Damn, I loved that cartoon, I don't care bout Ocarinas or Twilights, that to me was the definte Zelda.

DeepChrome In reply to C-Abdulio [2008-09-13 07:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Yeah I liked the cartoon's look, it just needed updating. And I liked the game forms' look too, so I just felt like I should combine the two and see what happened. I'm pretty happy with it.

And hey, the cartoon Zelda could kick ass and take down names almost as well as Link. I liked her becuase she wasn't the helpless princess...just that some situations got out of her ability to deal with, or just called for a second person.
