Awesome shot! Would love to just go and explore, I guess I'm weird like that. Wonder about the smell though...

Great photograph, what an absolutely brilliant setting, the greyscale really brings out the detail of the bricks.

it is interesting, I would try put light on everyhing to have lighten all black parts of photo and tone it, probably try HDR too

In pitch black environments, especially tunnels, evenly front lighting the scene creates a very flat image that takes away from the contrasting textures that backlighting creates; essentially removing all the shape, texture and compositional elements that the backlighting is shaping and creating.
HDR by its very nature relies on a broad range of tones from light to dark being present in a scene, otherwise it wouldn't be HDR. In pitch black environments such as this the only way to achieve the same "effect" is to evenly light the scene artificially making sure that no corners are left untouched. As above this essentially flattens the compositional layers created by the dramatic lighting and reduces the impact of the whole image, distracting from the shape and texture and instead replacing it with very flat monotonous visual elements with little dynamic range. Thanks for the input though!
